I received this email this morning and thought I'd pass it on. I haven't seen anything like this posted before:
Methamphetamine cooks are buying propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-mart, Kroger, and emptying them of the propane gas. Then they fill the propane tanks with anhydrous ammonia, which they now have a recipe to cook meth. After they are finished with the propane tanks, they return them to the store. The stores refill the tanks with propane gas, unknowing to them the improper substance that was inserted in the tanks and sell them to their customers. Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane gas and hooked up to a grill, recreation vehicle, etc. You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas. If there is evidence of these substances, do not purchase the propane tank and advise the vendor of your findings. ..Seen this warning before a few times.
As I said before, this is yet one more reason why for the RV, we NEVER exchange tanks. We always just have ours filled. I'll replace the tanks with new ones every so often as needed. I've always avoided doing the exchange thing for the RV gas bottles. Too many of those exchange tanks look like they've 'seen better days'.

Hi All.
Will never be a problem for us. As we have never used any Exhange Propane Tanks. Its much cheaper to just buy your own 20 lb Propane Tank, or to use your 5 lb BBQ tank, and just have them refilled. We carry a 20 lb Propane Tank, for our BBQ, and also to use with our Mr Heater. We also have a Wave #6 Propane Heater as well, that feeds off of our two 30 lb Propane Tanks. We have never run out of Propane in the past 40+ years as RV'ers. Since we never use the 5er's RV Furance, ever, our Propane Tanks last us a very long time. By using our own tanks, we know exactley what we have. Good Luck. Happy Camping. Dan & Jill

Exchanged our rusty old LP tank last week for a refurbished and much better looking one at the local W-M and if there was anything bad inside it really helped my cooking prowess this past weekend as I cooked up 16 very tasty steaks and steamed six pounds of shrimp using that new tank.

As has been pointed out, these guys are not interested in taking empty tanks back and getting ones full of propane. The empty tank is what they want.
And with what they are making selling their "product," they aren't going to bother taking any tank back to get a deposit.

They won't because its currently just a myth. There's been no documented reports of it happening. While it has all the plausibility of a concern, the likely hood of it actually occuring is slim to nill.

So why would a meth dealer buy a propane tank, drain all the propane out, put his chemicals in, and the when it runs out, take it back to the store to get another bottle full of propane?
Why would he not just refill the bottle he already has?
This makes no sense.
