Just returned home from 5 days on the South Fork. Very relaxing, beating the heat and city noises, especially the firecrackers.

We went up last Wednesday and set up camp. Our neighbors were to join us the next day. Not knowing exactly where we might find a suitable camp site I sent my neighbor a SPOT check once we located a good site. This thing is amazing BTW. It sent him an email via satellite showing our exact location on a Google map. He knew we were at Skeleton Creek before he even left home!!!

Camp pics.

Three moose wandered through camp the first night. Stupid, stupid camera takes too long to warm up and the 1st moose disappeared into the brush before I could get him.

DW picked some wildflowers

One day we spent climbing Iron Mountain to the lookout on our quads. Couldn't get the last 1/4 mile. Too much snow. Trail was fairly easy with some rough spots. 9600 feet.

Amazing how trees appear to be growing out of solid rock!!

It was a wonderful time and I feel I am so fortunate to live in the Great State of Idaho!!!

Good to see that you're using SPOT Check!

Can you comment on it's features and recurring costs?

Cheers,

Yes, I bought it at Cabalas for 150. You can also get them online. I bought the basic service for 100 per year. I opted out of the 50 per year tracking service as I have a GPS and mapping program for my laptop for that. I also purchased 100,000 of Search and Rescue insurance through this company for 7.95!!!

You can have up to 10 email/cell phone (for text msgs) set up to deliver when you push the button. You have 3 options. #1 - I'm OK and sends a clickable link to a Google map. #2 - I'm OK but need non emergency help. Same map feature. #3 - 911 Emergency. Notifies everyone on your emergency list plus the nearest law enforcement agency or your location!!

I camp, ride quads and dirt bikes oftentimes by myself for several days at a time. I can check in every night and can get help if I need it. These things are so affordable I can't believe every camper does not have one!! No affiliation BTW.

On edit, it does not rely on cell phone service. It sends via satellite.

I agree with you, DJ, the Spot is cool. Here's where we were on the fourth, the top of Carter Dome, NH:

DJ - we barely set foot in Idaho on our trip west this past June. We are saving Idaho for the next trip as it sure does deserve a lot of time. Maybe we can email you for some special places to go. Part way through our trip we stopped at a Staples and bought a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS digital camera. The Kodak Easy Share Z740 takes great photos but just TOO SLOW when trying to get animal photos. Technology marches onwards.

Great photos!

Hey DJ, I recently bought a hitchhaul rack to carry my TW200 on the front like I see you have your bike in your signature. It seems like my truck was running kinda hot with the bike on the front. Have you experienced any problem with that? Thanks,
Jim

Where Skeleton Creek dumps into the S.F. About 14 miles east of Featherville.
