Your too kind. Actually the "steps out" has happened to me once and to this day don't know why and it hasn't happened again. I had driven several miles before it caught my eye in the side mirror. I pulled over and opened/closed the door and it retracted. Making sure they're retracted is now one of my visual checks so I learned something.

I always have to check my right mirror to see if the steps came in. they don't about 10% of the time. All I do then is open and shut the door and they come in. Of course mine is 19 yrs old.

In regards to the steps being out, one of the first things I did as a new motorhome owner (especially after hearing numerous stories about the steps not retracting) was to put bright orange reflective tape on the sides of the steps facing the front of the motorhome. This makes it MUCH EASIER to see if the steps are out when looking into the rear view mirror...even when it's dark.

I also put the reflective tape on the sides facing the back so when parked in a rest area the steps are much more visible to vehicles coming up along that side. Usually we keep them retracted in such instances, the reflective tape serves as a good backup plan.

Great idea I have had ours stick when parked in front of the house when they are too close to the curb. and the reflector to the rear is great too, like you I set the stairs to go in when parked in a driveway or parking lot but all it takes is once to forget and soemone hit and ruin the stairs and possibly more.

I can see how someone could drive away with the steps out as they are easy to miss with a glance in the mirror. But I can't imagine driving away with a slide extended. (of course, assuming I had a rig with slides) It's been engrained in many years of commercial driving to ALWAYS check both mirrors before moving the vehicle. I thought everyone did that, apparently they don't.

Maybe he had the wife riding in the slideout so she could tell him when it was clear to pull out and pass other vehicles.

I like the assumptions that it was a driver fault. Just maybe it was a know problem which could not be solved. Just maybe.

You would think the slide toppers would start coming apart at freeway speeds, and that is if they are good toppers in good shape. Also could you imagine the pull you would feel on the steering wheel?

We saw an RV on the interstate while we were in Deming with EVERY single compartment door open! How could you miss that?

We were not on the interstate...no hope of catching them.
