I'm going to watch your post--we may want to join, if that's ok. We should be leaving New England next week, heading west. Have some stops to make, and have to meet up with another TC couple from New England, but Oregon is on our list. I'm a native, with family to visit, and I'd love to join the trip you describe, and I think my DH and our friends would like it too. Jeeps and dogs ok?

Anyone would be welcome, it's just that we don't have a when and an exact where.

Just be warned that if you have over 35', you can't take 242.

How does Labor Day weekend sound for things?

Either a Thursday or Friday departure?

Matthew, wouldn't that be a time when lots of folks would be out there camping too? Might make it difficult. Not sure though.

We can make it anytime the consensus says.

Joe Chi Okie, hope you can make it too but, did you hear what Matthew B said.... 'Punctual'?

Getting into camp early gives a better chance at getting sites too.

We're a GMC 1 ton dually with a Lance 1191, so length shouldn't be a problem, and I'm hoping height won't be either. And we're 4x4, because we beach camp here in the east.

You shouldn't have a problem. We will be taken it easy anyhow and Matthew B has a big camper and dually truck too. You could follow him if you'd like.

Matthew B what is your preference CB or FRS? I like the cb's personally.

OK, I'm going to make an executive decision and set dates for this trip because of the hassling OVER HERE

HWY 242 won't open until mid August, so let's do this Labor Day weekend.

Here's the itinerary:

Wednesday, September 2nd:

Stay the night at Lost Lake Campground

Thursday, September 3rd:

Map of Thursday

Travel from Lost Lake, over the pass on US 26, then hit the narrow one lane paved roads past Timothy Lake.

From there FS 42 is two lane paved road to Detroit. After that take HWY 22 South to US 20. This is very good paved state highway that travels South and climbs up with nice views.

On US 20, turn West to HWY 126. Travel West on 126 and take a hike from Clear Lake past the three falls of the upper McKenzie river. Do a key swap so we all can just hike down and not have to go back up.

Travel back up 126 then head West on 20 to Jack Pine road. Head out Jack Pine road and pick out a spot to boondock for the night.

This is a giant old burn on dense volcanic ash. You can pretty much travel around for many square miles and camp wherever. It is popular with dirt bike folks... crossing fingers that Thursday night before Labor day isn't too bad. I have stayed up there on over Labor day before and it's a bit more busy that I would go for on Saturday & Sunday, but Friday night wasn't bad.

Friday, September 4th:

Map of Friday

From here there are two ways back out to US 20.

One would be to head east on the main line and come out to Big Lake Road. I've done it in my empty truck, but I'd worry that I could get stuck with the camper on because of the poor departure angle with my long, low rear overhang.

If you've never done it, it's worth the trip because of the awesome views of both Mt Washington and Hayrick. I'll be more than happy to direct people through it.

The other way would be to go back out Jack Pine Rd. I'll be doing that.

If we separate, meet back up at Santiam Snow Park Parking Lot.

Head to the headwaters of the Metolius River and take the short hike out to the headwaters.

Head further east and then cut over to HWY 242 on a short gravel road and head West again.

Stop at The Dee Wright Observatory.

Continue to the end of HWY 242 and then head West on 126.

Take FS 19 from 126 over to HWY 58. This travels up the South Fork of the McKenzie river, up over a pass and then travel back down the North Fork of the Willamette river.

Fuel, DQ ice cream stop and tank dump in Oakridge on HWY 58.

Take FS 21 up to the headwaters of the Willamette and spend the night out in the boonies off Road 2160.

Saturday, September 5th

Map of Saturday

Travel to Diamond lake campground. Grab a shower and dump tanks if needed.

Tour around Crater Lake NP.

Travel south to within 10 miles of the border and camp near HWY 66.

Sunday, September 6th

Map of Sunday

Head East on HWY66, loop around the East side of Upper Kalamath Lake and the head north on US 97.

Stop at Collier State Park and visit the logging museum.

Take HWY 58 West, Crescent Cutoff North, then head North on Cascade Lakes HWY.

There are several options for staying the night.
There are many FS campgrounds along Cascade Lakes highway, but none take reservations. Getting a place Sunday night could be a problem. We could boondock near Wickiup Reservoir as there are many places there to do so.

Or we could make reservations at Tumalo State Park. Tumalo is very nice, BUT it doesn't have the flavor of the high Cascades campgrounds that the FS campground would have.

Monday, September 6th.

GO HOME!
I'm going to head back US 20 and HWY 22 home.

Matt yer going to be hard pressed to find much of any campgrounds with vacancies near Diamond Lake or Crater Lake anytime during a holiday, they fill up full (Been in those areas during a holiday weekend).

Just about any campground, even primitive ones, within a hundred miles of a larger city (Eugene, Portland, etc) will likely be crammed full over that weekend.

Hey Joe, read the itinerary!

The google maps have locations out in the boonies, and I've stayed at all of them over the years.

I'm thinking of zipping out to the southern two ones in my rice burner to check and make sure the FS hasn't thrown gates up since I was last there.

Central Oregon Lakes

Not quite the right page, but you should be able to lookup most of the campgrounds status from that website, though, just probably not on that page.

Mike and I were at Odell Lake over Memorial day Weekend, we made reservations a month out and couldn't get sites side-by-side and this was for the East Shore campground.

Those FS campgrounds nearer to Eugene and Roseburg and the lot are getting alot fuller more often these days, more folks are camping closer to home and where its cheaper. Also, alot of the Mexican folks from down south have discovered these areas and camping (If you can call it that, partying would be more accurate), just ask Ron, Mike, or me, there were several low riders cruising Diamond Lake in the middle of July last year .

Sadly, I wouldn't be able to make it in any case because Dawn and I had already made plans for the Labor day weekend .

Hi Matt
We won't be able to do your trip. I will be on the Harley for a 3 week trip across the U.S.
Down by Crater on 62 there is 2 sno-parks. The one going east on 62 just outside the park would be a great place to overnight for a group.
Have a great trip.

I (2-10-05) bought a 2002 F350 CC SWD PSD and a new 2003 Citation 10'8. Rancho 9000X, Superhitch, Wave 3 & Toyo M55's or Toyo 19.5's. I have been a tent camper all my life. I wanted more comfort while camping and doing my Crater Lake Ski Patrol duties.
