We wanted to camp at one of the campgrounds right in the Park but reservations is saying the campgrounds are closed after May '09. Any ideas what is going on? The operators didn't have a clue. We like more seclusive sites where you can't really see your neighbor. Hookups are not important to us. We have a 26 foot travel trailer and my sister has a 30 foot - we will be traveling together. Hope to go the week before the fourth of July. Any suggestions for other campgrounds in the area?

We were at Mammoth Cave this past August.
We stayed at a Corps of Engineers campground in Bee Spring. It was quite nice. Full hook ups and although you were not near your neighbor, you could see them. We were there after the local schools started. Hardly a soul at the campground. Camp Host said prior to school starting it was a busy place, especially on the weekends.
The campground was about a 15 minute drive to the park.
FWIW, we had reservations for the cave tours that we took.

No clue what's going on - I assume you mean that you called the park about it? Anyway, I think most sites there would be tight for the larger trailer; we camped there years ago in a PUP and it was fine (despite lack of hookups); they do offer showers (extra $ I think) walkable from parts of the CG.

We drove by yestereday on the way to do the Historical Tour but all was dead at the CG service center (very few vehicles). There could be some construction or they are using the space for something else. They are giving 400,000 tours a year still so I doubt they are closing it but anything is possible.
We actually slept in the park in the Diamond Caverns parking lot since we arrived at 7 PM on Sat then after touring it we drove on the the MC proper.
KY has budget issues but MCNP is federal.

You also have to realize there's not going to be threads from just a few days ago...there will be some from June - September when people were actually there...there's not much activity during the dead of winter

Reservations "closed" could mean full already for the spring break. I would call the park.

There is a private campground in Cave City nearby that's called Cave Country RV Park right off the interstate. Its relatively new, reasonable with all pull through full hookup and wifi. Its close to Mammoth Cave and in town there is a great Mexican restaurant.

You might look into Nolin River SP....this is a beautiful CG.....we were there during fall break and absolutely loved it...can't wait to go back during the summer and get the full feel of the CG...it"s still a clean, beautiful, and nice CG
