The next two things we're going to do is refinish the interior of the grill lid with the grill type spray paint, but we have to wait for warmer weather on that. Also, we want to attach a lightweight type tub to the bottom frame to store the pans, charcoal starter, and utencils in. Dutch Oven cooking is a lot of fun!!!

That looks really nice! Thanks for sharing. I think that's the gas grill we have, actually. Ours is still working though.

I've been looking fora 'retired' gas grill to make something similar. Maybe I should post on Freecycle for one because I haven't had any luck so far finding one elsewhere.

OK ya'll... I've got a possibly stupid question. My dutch ovens do not have the legs. Can I still use them as dutch ovens and put charcoal under them somehow. Bought them to se on my BIG GAS GRILL which works great. BUT now I want to get into DO cooking. Any suggestions short of buying all new pots. I already have 2-10", 1 12", 1-14" and a 20 quart. I would say the cast iron alone makes me overloaded when we leave the driveway. Thanks in advance for your replies. Steve A. Dagro

Steve...Prior to purchasing our Dutch Ovens I was advised by several members on here to be sure to get the "camp" ovens....because they obviously were the ones that came with the legs so heat from charcoal or coals could be evenly distributed underneath them. Someone that has been cooking with DO's longer than we have may have a suggestion in order to use your existing pots. The only one I can come up with is to use a tripod over an open fire where you get the heat from underneath and could still put coals on the lid. (But the lid idea will be tough too if your pots don't have lips on them)

sdagro there's no problem with the bottom, but the lid can be a real challenge.
You can use a lid rack, rocks (careful, no river rocks), or pipe couplers to set it on. You can use AL foil to build a "dish" for the lid, and if you're careful it will work.

Maybe you could just get new lids for the DO? We have a Lodge outlet store here in Myrtle Beach and they have absolutely everything you could imagine for cast iron cooking, even replacement lids! Mo Couple has a picture of placing a small DO on top of a larger one and using a metal candle pedastal for spacing in between so the coals from the top of the larger one could serve as the bottom heat for the smaller one on top. Perhaps that could work for your DO without legs.

Oh!!! The lid is not a problem. All; but one has the dutch oven lid with the rim. I use 1 of the 10" ovens strickly for frying. It has a flat lid. Steve

Steve,

As SWMO already mentioned, pipe works well as "feet". I use about 2" lengths of used pipe cut up with a sawsall- a hacksaw works too. If you have to buy them, the short lengths (usually called nipples) are cheaper than couplers.

For anyone with a domed DO lid, an appropriately sized spring form pan (without the bottom ) works pretty well for keeping the coals on top.

Then you really have no problem.
I have a 10" AL dutch that has no legs, but has a lipped lid. I use a lid rack to set it on and it works fine. Steel pipe cut to height, or couplings for the pipe work well also.
