Dang CM! I've only changed my oil 20 times in the past 101k miles! 15k oil changes? J/k...
Lots of balony sandwiches about maintenance. I changed the oil in my Cummins Rams at 4k miles for the 12v and 7500 miles for the 24 valve engines. They all got fuel filters every 12k miles. I change the oil in my current Hemi powered Ram every 5k miles. I've changed the plugs once at 68k miles and the wires are fine. I just put it's second Mopar air filter in and did it's first transmission fluid and filter pan drop service a couple of weeks ago. It got it's first new set of Michelins at 97k miles and I've decided to keep it a couple of more years and a new 4.56 ring and pinion is going in next week. I was about to trade it for my 5th Cummins Ram but I've gotten used to no dealer visits in over 100k miles. I'd like to keep it that way. I'm hoping the emissions problems will be resolved by the time I wear out the new 4.56 R&P. I've got the itch for another Cummins but, I don't want a shop fly and I don't want to have to go hit the interstate for 45+ minutes with cruise control off every time the soot needs to be burned off. The prices sure are enticing though!
Keep us posted how the new 4.56 does for you! Should pull the hills alot stronger, but I wonder about fuel mileage.

Sounds like you'll soon be needing a new truck if you're not doing any maintenance on your present truck (or your not driving it). Either way why would you buy another truck?

Still thinking about yanking off those stupid turbochargers on the Powerstrokes and putting on a supercharger. All the mechanics I ask to do the work of course to stimulate the economy say I'm nuts and it's an absurd idea to run around with 15K pound trailers being pulled by a V8 supercharged motor.
If done would that make it a Superstroke???
Wonder what would be louder a 7.3 Powerstroke or a supercharged gasser pulling 15K lbs up a steep grade?
To the original poster,
If your rig works now why change it? How about buying a new supercharged gasser instead of finding ways to not buy a turbocharged diesel? What would your options be???

LarryJM wrote: $15K to $20K more, give me a break and that just shows me how little you know of the actual cost of a diesel and the necessary gasser engine upgrade to get to a somewhat lower level of performance. You can still get a E350 with the 6.0L engine for under 8K and the V10 is IIRC about 1K upgrade so that's a 7K option for the diesel over the highest offered gasser.
....which was started almost 6 years ago and if you read thru that many of these diesels have routinely gone 500k to almost 1 million miles under operating conditions that would rival RV towing. Show me a gasser thread that has that hands on real world exereience. So?
How many "millions of miles" are on your sig. diesel? Looks almost new to me.

My pickup runs like new, I just wanted to help the folks out by buying one that would always need high dollars service on it. I read all these posts about all the problems on the diesels and it makes me feel so lonely with one that never has a problem.

I was also told about this higher maint cost of a diesel when I baught mine. Well, I can't seem to figure out when this higher cost kicks in. Oil changes are more money, but do them half as often(equals out). Fuel filters? Less than $20 a pop, not majorly expensive. Hmmmm...no other cost. But boy do I save on fuel when towing my toys around.

surveyorip, My mileage will probably tank a couple on the interstate running empty as I'll be running 2350rpm at 70 instead of 1900rpm with the 3.73. In town, since I'll drop into 2nd O/D at 45mph for 1500~rpm instead of hanging on to 4th 1st O/D as it does now at 1750~rpm, rpm will actually be lower and launches will be easier. Might even increase my city mileage a tad, maybe... Towing, I'll be in 4th O/D at 2500~rpm instead of 2600rpm as it is now in direct. I'll be using direct for the up-hills at 3400-3800rpm instead of the 4200rpm 2nd gear with the 3.73. The 3.73 is perfect for getting peak torque on the uphills but I don't really need 300 advertised hp. 250hp is plenty for our 5th wheel and it'll be more relaxed and, cruise control/ECM/TCM is much less hesitant to shift between O/D and direct so it won't give that all or nothing feeling in the hills. If it doesn't work as planned, my plans are still for a new 6.7L 6spd auto i the next couple of years.

Just bought a new 2008 6.7 about 1300 miles ago. My '05 had 80K miles on it and had never seen the shop except for oil/lube/tires. Had decided on upgrading to an exhaust brake and since my '05 was due for a total lube change out (keeping the warrenty up) and due for two batteries possibly and brakes,I decided to put $1000 down on a new Big Horn 6.7 loaded with the as usual QC, Auto,4X4 etc for $18.00 more per month. After all was said and done I figured it cost me about $28600 for a new truck powered by Cummins of course. Still grinning. Just thought I'd throw Supercharged and friend(?) a bone to chew on as apparently he needs something to do just like a little puppy dog.JMHO
