Down at my stick house in Lake Jackson Texas (Houston) I have two Dish Network boxes and each output to two different TV's each so we
can watch four different channels at the same time. Not only do I have one of the packages but I pay I think its $5.00/month so I can get my local Houston channels. The boxes haven't been plugged into a phone line in years so I think they might be charging me a fee because of that.
OK here's the actual question. I'm working in central Ohio and want to bring one of the boxes up here and set it up. My thought is I'd get to watch my local Houston channels up here in Ohio along with cable channels.
I have two buddies I work with that claim it will not work up here
but I"m lost as to why that would be. Dish Network would never know I moved the box because its not plugged into a phone line. Their reasoning is that I"m to many degree's away from the Houston area but its picking up all the channels off two birds I thought and I"m looking at both of them.
Before I go to the expense of buying a dish for up here, does anyone know how true this is? I figured there were full timers that deal with this. Thanks for any help. Wes

Well, ours is not plugged into a phone line either, but they seem to know when we unplug it, dont ask me how, but I had them on the phone one day asking for help with the remote and she seemed to be able to tell everything I was doing to it, including unplugging it.
You might just call and ask them..

It won't work for you local stations because the local station are "spot beamed" to your local area.
Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I sort of do this with DirecTV. I have a house in Oregon and Vegas. I can only use 1 house at a time right? So I am so very happy with DirecTV and here is what they do for me.
I have a dish in Vegas and Oregon, no extra charge for the extra dish.
I have 1 box (tuner box) in Oregon and 1 in Vegas.
When I am in Oregon, I get my local Oregon stations AND all the other ones in my package. But If I go to Vegas, I do not get any local stations, not from Oregon and not from Oregon. But I do get all the other channgel in my package.
So all I have to do is call DirecTV and tell them I need to change my local stations. It takes them about 15 minutes, but once they do whatever it is they do from their office, I will get the local Vegas stations. But then I do not get any local stations in Oregon. (does that make sense)?
Basically DirecTV allows me to have only 1 account but they will switch my local stations whenever I need to. And the best part, they do not charge me to do this. I pay for 1 account and 2 boxes. I only have 1 TV at each house.
On almost forgot, the ONLY reason they want you to have your box connected to a phone line is so you can order pay per view movies. They assume if it's connected, you will be more inclined to order them. All of the updating come thru that satellite signal and not the phone line. There is no reason to connect it unless you order pay per view. I've had DirecTV for year and never had it connected to a phone line.

I do not believe huston is on the national "Super Cites" list.. Los Angles and NYC/Alatana yes, Houston no
A better option if you have high speed internet at both ends is a Sling Box
However I do not recommend a Sling Box where you are using "Public Access" or Campground internet. Bandwidth limits

I know it will work. Now whether or not they'll let you do it is another question. I grew up in Seabrook and moved around a bunch after high school but always missed the local Houston news. While living in McAllen the RGV didn't have a local Fox channel. I called Dish and I was able to pay for Fox Houston. Once the RGV received a Fox station they took Fox Houston off of my account without even asking. I called and complained but I forgot what their excuse was. That said, yes it "can" work but it may not.

When we lived in Clatskanie, Oregon, we'd get "local" channels - meaning the local network stations (NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox)out of Portland, Oregon. We bought this house south of Bend, Oregon, 245 miles from Clatskanie, we'd bring our receiver (the black box) and our portable dish from Clatskanie and hook up. We'd still get the Portland stations. When we moved here permanently, we called and changed our address. We no longer were able to get the local stations out of Portland "because it was too far away"...???? The stations out of Bend are NOT on the "local" listing....seems DishNetwork NOR Directtv want to pay to buy the equipment that will make us be able to get locals. I've applied for 3 waivers and have been denied 3 times. We now go thru another company for the locals but we only get CBS and ABC (I think) out of San Francisco and Atlanta, Georgia.
Hope this helps you understand

You can record four programs at the same time with two boxes but you can only watch two.

Forty minutes on the phone with Dish, MIGRAIN, nearly told them to go fly a kite, in fact told them I"d switch to cable and she said, "sorry to hear that".
I was asking her about my RV and she said I could do it but when she found out I'd be moving it she said I didn't qualify. What the heck do you do with an RV?????? I typically move mine from time to time.
I"ve had the same two boxes for six years or so so in order to "upgrade" I have to give one of them up but she told me if I wanted a third box I could buy one for $200. I said that was fine and I"d just pay $200 for the box I"ve had for over six years. She told me it was complicated and I couldn't do that. AM I MISSING SOMETHING. They aren't going to reuse that old box are they? I am offering to pay a HUGE PREMIUM for a piece of electronic equipment that for all practical purposes is end of life in electronics world. I give up.
She had to have my credit card to see if they could even come out on a certain day. I told her if it wasn't that day, because I work out of town, then I'd have to call back in a month or two. Why would she need a credit card just to talk to me?????????????????
I love my Dish Network but everytime I"ve dealt with them its been a bloody nightmare. They should take notes from Southwest Airlines. I fly four trips a month with them and after I hang up with customer service I"m usually laughing or in a good mood. With Dish I'm peeved at the world, want to kick the dog, swallowing Motrin and chasing it with Crown. What gives?

You know I tried to upgrade over a year ago. I paid my $150 and they showed up as promised but said they couldn't mount the HD dish where I wanted it, RIGHT WHERE MY OTHER DISH WAS. He wanted it on the roof but there were to many tree's in the way so they left. I called to get my money back and they did. A week later a guy was going door to door selling Dish Network but I told him I was already a customer but I asked him to look at my upgrade issue. He said there would be no problem mounting it where my other one was so I called Dish back to reschedule and I took the day off. They never showed up, never called. I called several times but never got an answer if they were still coming or when. They never came. It took me over three months to get my refund for that time. Don't understand them. I have no issues with the quality of the actual service but customer support is out of this world.

Ok, the problem with what the O/P wants to do is he wishes to get Houston TX stations in Ohio.
Save for the "Super Cities" (And I'm not sure on those) which are Los Angles and NYC/Atlanta area (used to include Denver, Chicago and one other city in that list but I do not think All American Direct picked those up) "Local" stations are SPOT BEAMED
What is a spot beam you ask?
Well, who was it, Shakespeare said "All the world's a stage"
Imagine a large theater stage, on the stage floor is painted a map of these United States (And yes, that is the proper way to say it) and right atop your house is the star of the musical, singing his big solo, the lights are dimmed out and a single spot light lights him up,, This spot light would, of course, also be lighting your house, and your neighbor's for about 200 miles around.
Now if you are "in the light" you are.. Well "in the light"
But if that star is standing on Houston. .Ohio is.. Well.. "In the dark"
And so will you be
You see, a spot light *IS* a spot beam it is not "like a spot beam" it IS a spot beam, same thing exactly.
