I'm sure there are quite a few of us W-20 & W-22 chassis owners carrying IR readers with us now---how about posting the temperatures that you are recording under normal operating conditions?

What is considered abnormal?

After having to replace all four rotors on my W22 because of severe cracking I installed a full time temperature monitoring system that uses thermocouples attached to the brake pad backing plates. I have driven several thousand miles with this system, including some difficult mountain passes in Colorado.

What I have observed is that in normal driving with moderate brake use the maximum temperatures are in the range of 250 to 300 degrees. With heavier braking they go up to around 350 degrees. The passenger side rear wheel is the hottest.

I have seen two instances where it went over 500 degrees, once when coming down a long steep grade (in second gear) and once after an extended period of driving in fast but heavy stop-and-go traffic. The highest temperature was 550 degrees.

I have observed two instances where I believe the calipers on one wheel became temporarily stuck, causing the temperature to rise abnormally. In both cases the condition cleared itself.

I have asked both Workhorse and Bosch what the maximum safe temperature is but have been unable to get an answer.

In spite of thousands of complaints WH continues to insist that there is nothing wrong with the brake system and that all failures are caused by improper use of the brakes or poor maintenance. The NHTSB has an ongoing investigation into the problem and hopefully will publish their findings soon.

hwybnb that was a great job you did both with the hardware and the write up.

While a more indirect tool we have the TPMS that www.tsttruck.com sells.

Besides giving two types of alarms if the tire PSI goes below or above preset PSI readings it will alarm if the tempature goes above a the reading you program in the TPMS computer that comes from the sensor at the valve stem.

The read out of wheel temperature going down the road is interesting as well as the PSI. For a typical vehicle with 6 tires the TPMS is $299. We ordered our system last spring and really like it.

Again this does not compare with your system for details directly from the brake pads but it only requires one to replace the valve stem caps and plug in the computer to the 12v lighter socket in the dash.

Thanks again for sharing your detail solution to a common problem for vehicles that do not get used daily.

hwybnb - Everytime I see that link I decide to build a great setup with an old laptop and labview! The industrial stuff is so flexible (and can be economical).
