Greyhounds have mastered the art of sunbathing. All my hounds have loved to lay in a sunny spot inside or outside, but my Bridge hound Willow was a Greyhound American Princess. One day years ago when my mother was visiting (and I was away at work), Willow was laying quietly in her favorite spot in the dining room catching the rays through the window while mom was sitting and reading at the table. Suddenly, the sun went behind the clouds. My mom told me (between laughs) that her royal highness got up and barked at her. I guess she figured that it was grandmom's fault, and it was her responsibility as WIllow's personal slave to fix it .

It's a dog thing.

And if someone ever figures out that "dog thing", please let me know! LOL!

All my labs have done that and I have had 5. they are very addictive. I have had chocolates and 1 black. My pointer rescue doesn't do that. Who knows - I agree with the "dinnertime."

OK, so there is no logical/medical reason for sunbathing dogs other than it just plain feels good.
And, I agree about dinnertime. BlacJac has a watch, I know he does. If he didn't know what time it was, why else would he start tap dancing precisely at 4:55 every afternoon in anticiation of 5 p.m. dinner.
Labs rule!

9 of our dogs love sunbathing....outside or finding the sunbeam on the floor inside (sometimes they are practically on top of each other to get in that small sunbeam!)...the only one who does not sunbathe is our pure black collie/chow mix...she is also the only one who will lay in the snow and LOVE it! jump in the snow...burrow in the snow...she's definitely a snow dog!
I don't try to understand them...just love them! (they are the best entertainment there is!)

Our Boston Terrier is a sun bather. At the beach in March, he refused to sit under the shade we provided --- he walked out on his lead to the sunny spot.

In a few minutes, his face was red with heat. We pulled him inside the shade.

In a few minutes, he was right back out in the sun.

Bostons cannot tolerate extreme heat (nor cold), so his sun worshipping behavior requires constant monitoring by the humans.

But he sure is relaxed when in a sunny spot. He just adores it.

HEY .......It's just 5 o clock somewhere...... I never try to understand our schneppard (schnauzer /shppeard mix)BUt she is hapy laying in the sun and when she gets too warm she will move off to the cool kitchen floor or just out of the sunshine but will go back when she's needing warmed up. Every dog I have owned does the same thing Sometimes I wish we had such an easy life as the dogs do...LOL

I've had a lot of dogs over my lifetime but my little Lizzi is the best at back sleeping. She'll even position herself against the wall at night so she can snooze on her back with all 4 in the air. It is like having a sundial to watch her track the best sun around the yard all day.

My chihuahua loves to lay in the dining room in front of the French doors and catch some sun. Of course if the temp outside drops below 60 he thinks we've packed up and moved to Alaska.
