Well, we made it to a nice little park in Overgaard called Elk Pines and lucked out and got a site for a week because the folks coming in for the summer are running a week late!

I'm glad I chose 87/260, wow, what a scenic drive!

We spent several days in Show Low in late March. We took 180 from Springerville to Deming. Beautiful forest and amazing grades coming down out of the mountains. More changes of scenery than you can count. If you get to Show Low, eat at the Fiesta Mexicana restaurant. Fantastic food, staff and service. Restaurant is on the main drag and is a pink/salmon colored building.

In Show Low is Fool's Hollow State park which is one of the finest state parks we've experienced. FHU is $25/night in spaces that are large, well dispersed and served by restrooms that are a combined toilet/sink/shower facility. Tall Ponderosa pines, good fishing, great bird watching, fine hiking trails and plenty of room to spread out. Only problem: no reservations, it's first come/first served.

I've driven the 87/260 dozens of times and always prefer it over the Salt River Canyon route. 87 and 260 are both very scenic. It's really nice that 87 is now mostly 4 lane.

From Heber to Showlow you will see the aftermath of Arizonas worst forest fire. The forest is mostly gone on both sides of the highway for 40 miles from Heber to Showlow. Caused by two man made fires that joined.
