Don't look at the tag on the exterior of the camper for weight - look at the tag inside the closet - this is camper weighed - dry with all options installed.
My tag on the rear says 1900 pounds - my camper is "loaded" with options so the tag inside the closet says 2450-ish.
I have a a 3500 SRW chev with a lighter camper than the one you have. The GVWR of the SRW is 9900 pounds (at least mine is...) On my truck, I added a hellwig sway bar, new shocks (kyb monomax), and airbags and it rides very well in the rear. If I had a newer chev SRW - I would probably consider going with supersprings over airbags (the newer models don't have a third overload on top - so I think the supersprings will bolt right on...)
I am over the GVWR but under for the ratings on the axles & tires - so I feel fine...
FWIW, I love my truck. Smooth and silky... The interiors on the newer trucks look a step above mine...

Can you tell me what a p7100 or KDP is?

The P7100 is the Bosch mechanical injection pump supplying fuel to the cylinders. Just as a distributor times a spark distribution, so does the pump on the older Cummins motors. It is a high pressure pump that is timed to distribute fuel at a pressure high enough to activate the injectors.
The KDP is short for KILLER DOWEL PIN. It is a set pin to alighn the gear case that can over time work its way out which destroys the timing gears. There are preventative measures to this and it is advisable to do it to your moter since it is so young.
See the TURBO DIESEL REGISTER for a wealth of information on this. HERE is one article on the fix.

Even though the replies to this post ran about 4:1 in favor of keeping the Dodge, the DW seems to think we need a new truck and is favoring the '08 Chev.
I know this is not exactly Kosher to offer the truck for sale in this forum group - but, in this post several of you have expressed interest in purchasing our 98 Dodge (see my initial entry for a description of the truck). Here are a few more details: has an A.R.E. topper on it, bed liner, goose neck hitch, electric brake controller, new transmission about 5k miles ago, body & interior are in excellent condition. Otherwise everything else is stock.
If you are interested, send me a PM and I'll get some photos ready. I'm located in SW Montana.

Well then, making reasonable assumptions about equipment, the 'good condition', private party value from Kelly Blue Book is $34,795.
You probably already know that.
So it's a matter of where you want to spend your money (and how much), and personal preference.
Taking noting away from a possible classic Dodge, I think you'd be better off with the newer, stronger, Chevy.

I also think you should keep the Dodge, a month after you sell it you will be kicking yourself. My concern is why you are using oil at 118,000 miles. That motor should be tight as a drum. Do you have any leaks?
Can you swing buying the new truck and holding on to the old one for 6 months, just to make sure you really like it?

A local camper deal hauls around Host campers with your rig. I believe the tires are the 19" jobs and the truck is about your vintage and it looks great.
Get your Dodge detailed, with plenty of new truck smell, maybe even some new seat covers and maybe things will be well with the DW.

I like the idea of keeping the Dodge, it really is a tough truck. We've hauled a 4 horse goose neck trailer with it for years. I'll have to convince the DW that having another insurance & license payment makes sense. I guess we could have a "his & hers truck", but that is going to be a tough sell.
I'm also a bit uneasy about buying a "Government Motors Corp" vehicle. What will GM's bankruptcy mean to warranty service and parts cost and availability? Would this 2008 Chevy turn out to be an albatross?
