I use my 3600 LP Microquiet to:
1) recharge my battery bank when boondocking
2) pre-cool the interior for an hour prior to destination arrival
3) power my air compressor when changing a tire along the highway
4) nuking a frozen snack at a rest stop

When I was working, I used it to power the coach...providing a comfortable on-site office and break room...especially nice when working in 90* heat.

We have the onboard 5500, originally installed in our 2003 so its pushing 6 years old now. Never any problem.

It's not a boondocker, as it will eat both tanks in 13 hrs at full load, but its is great for the vacationer that likes to vacuum up before putting her away, nuking a box lunch, pre-cooling the rig, running the compressor, all the things stated above.

I added a remote control so I can start it from outside or even traveling down the road. (not the billion dollar Onan remote start, just a cheap key fob remote relay type).

Ours is a 2600 with remote start. We use it when we stop for lunch to run the microwave. Will handle the A/C also with no problem. Do need to excercise occassionally. Enjoy!

Do: 1. Run the genny at least one hour a month under some load.

2. Spring for 40-lb. tanks to replace the 30s if you intend to dry camp much.

3. Keep spiders and dirt daubers out of you regulator vent tubes (if you can see them)

4. Be aware that the LP versions sometimes have problems with regulators (it seems that they need their own regulators separate from the coach supply—it seems that you can possibly starve the coach appliances, have a burner on the stove go out, we'll say, and then have gasses escape into the coach).

The little bit I have learned from our Onan 3500 LP Marquis.

We had a propane gen. installed by the dealer when we bought our rig new in '06. We don't dry camp that much but I wanted the gen. to cool off the rig if need be before we reach our destination. Well as much as I like the gen. it is useless when traveling. I can't believe my husband accepted it this way: We have to plug our big power cord into the gen. and run it outside along the side or under the rig and then plug it into the rig outlet. How stupid is that??????? What lazy techs that installed this gen. Oh but let me tell you we "can" turn the gen on inside the trailer. Well what good it is that!!!!!!!!!! I am soooooo ticked! I have tried to talk hubby into somehow running the cord under the rig and attaching it to the underbelly somehow so we can use the gen when we are moving. He just doesn't care.

Sarahdove,

Why didn't the dealer install an automatic transfer switch? Your house power and genset power would feed this switch and the switch would feed out to your RV breaker box. When the genset is turned off, the switch is set to work off the shore power but when the genset is turned on, a timer will start and after about thirty seconds (at least thats how mine works) the switch will switch over to the genset power automatically. Its so fast my computer doesn't even blink. I'm betting it can be installed fairly easy.

We have an Onan 4000 gas powered in our rig and we use it all the time. Being a toyhauler we have a 35 gallon fuel tank so fuel has never been an issue. If you are boondocking you will need the gennie. I run mine close to once amonth to keep things lubed and flowing.

Another vote for Onan LP. Ours will run both A/Cs, Microwave and lots of lights at the same time no problem. Only time I tripped the breaker was with furnace, dead batteries, fridge, water heater, almost all lights and fireplace all going at the same time. I carry a spare 30lb bottle for peace of mind. I went with LP over gasoline so I only had to get 2 fuels instead of three.
