This issue has come up several times on this forum. I found this interesting article from RV Central and I thought I would post it since it answers many of the questions relative to the differences in the two...Dennis

That is sure to make the DP owners smile and swell up with pride but it is so grossly one-sided it is not worthy of discussion.

Some great points when looking at new MH's to consider in a technical left brain sense. Typically technical factors get out weighted by emotional right brain factors in buying decisions however. 
With the future of MH's being more in the 14K pound range diesels are going to have to morph some to fit into that sweet spot going forward but we see that they are. Navistar I think has out a nice 14K class chassis.
The 40-45' niche will be around for a while but as net income for future MH owners decrease they may be only sold as special orders and built after payment. Future pleasure taxes on this class may not be in the budget of future buyers.

The fact's are not correct with regards to brakes.
Like all recent Foretravels, my 2003 has four-wheel disk airbrakes and a transmission retarder instead of exhaust brake.

That article has more errors in it than my cat has fleas. I have a six speed Allison Transmission (not four) and Quadraulic brakes with my 22.5 inch wheels that will stop my coach with its 100 gallon gas tank and fiber glass roof faster than air brakes on the same weight diesel chassis. It is a shame that so called rv experts write and get this kind of stuff published. There are many front engine gas rigs out there with fiberglass roofs, Allsion transmissions, 22.5 inch wheels, lengths over 36 feet and quad brakes. How old is this "answer to questions" anyway? By the way, my chassis wheelbase is 242 and handles beautifully without airbags and height rods, thank you very much. The UFO also can be as big as 262.

I agree with Gramps in a lot of what he said. My gas rig has a fiberglass roof, 22.5 wheels, Allison 6 speed transmission that also brakes going downhill. I also find the 8.1 Chevy engine doesn't have trouble going up hills. The article is very one sided. It must have been written in the mid 90's.

Your fooling yourself if you think your 6 speed tranny is identical to the Allison 3000 series. You have the "El Fako" 5 speed that somehow they get it to change to a 6 speed ( I still havent figured that one out??) thru manipulations.
As far as stopping power goes...it may stop EQUALLY as well...but dont bet on the "faster idea"!

Read comments to "Gramps". A six speed tranny isnt necessarily a "six speed tranny". It may have the same "gears" but it doesnt begin to have the same HP and torque handeling capability

Its more of a "generalization" as compared to listing specific differences
