I'm getting prices on a Honda CR-V 2009. Towing a '95 Toyota 4runner now with Roadmaster tow bar (heavy). Would like to know how does one tow the CR-V (the steps to go through)? My tow now has a Remco disconnect on driveshaft I'm in Park while towing. Also suggestion on a new tow bar would be appreciated - hopefully much lighter. Thanks, Roy

We had an 04 Element and now an 08 CRV. Idling in P, you shift to R for 4-5 seconds, shift to L, then 2, then 3, the D then into N, idling in each ger 4-5 seconds. I let it idle five minutes in N then turn the key off. I also turn the AC and radio off. If you get the NAV option there is a fuse you need to pull. I don't pull any fuses and never have a problem with the battery.

I use a Ready Brute tow bar with the built in surge brake. Very happy with it. Aluminum and stainless steel, self-locking.

The steps vary somewhat from year to year. Basically, before starting out in the morning, or after eight hours of towing, one starts the engine and runs through all the gears, leaving it (in my 2002) neutral, with the key in the accessory position. In my case, I must also remove the #8 fuse, which incapacitates the radio (annoying 'security' feature), for which a code must be entered before using again. I love my Honda CR-V and it does tow very nicely, but I had several dead battery situations. I now also unplug both the brake system and the umbilical cord when connected overnight. So far, so good.

Follow the steps in the Honda manual, my 06 seems a little different than the Element --- Start engine, go thru the gears into Drive, put in Neutral, let idle 3 minutes, turn key back one click, good to go. I'm using Blue Ox Aladdin and their baseplate, diodes for the lights. Coach and CR-V have amber turn signals, 5 wires just for lights.

Roy,
No help on the towing procedures, but a comment on the tow bar. I am also a fan of the Ready Brute tow bar, light weight and the Auxiliary brakes all in one. Good price for a two in one unit.

My second choice would be the Blue Ox Aluminum. Very light and easy to connect by yourself.

Roy:

The important thing is that the last gear you move to nutral from has to be a forward gear. Do Not go from R to N.

I installed a battery disconnect switch on the battery simply because I am old, can't get down on knees etc., and that is the easiest way to make sure I don't drain the battery. Granted, you lose your presets on the radio, but if you are miles away from home it does not matter. If you have Navi then you just input the code as instructed and you are good to go.

Thanks to all who helped. On my way to look at a CR-V. Getting ready to travel so much easier with CR-V than the - not so trouble free Remco disconnect. Road grim gets in Remco disconnect, so on my knees and cleaner in hand somethimes ground wet, hot etc. Also Remco does get out of adjustment back on knees and under car for that. Definitely ready for a change. Like one said I'm getting to old for this unit.
Thanks again, Roy

Went to Honda dealer. They could not locate an all wheel drive CR-V in a 5 state area around La. Does anyone know if the all wheel drive has trouble so Honda does not make many or is it that they are so popular it stays sold out? May have to wait for a 2010... Roy

They are popular. I have had one for 5 years, best car I have ever owned.
