What tools do you use to determine if your tires are out of spec How can you measure 1/32" depth ?
I don't want to get into replace when tires are "x-years old". Lets keep on track that a tire is within time limits and appear in excellent condition EXCEPT a few sidewall cracks.

Quote from Tire Manufacture:

AGING, WEATHER CHECKING, AND OZONE
CRACKING
During the pre-trip inspection, be sure to check the tires
for signs of aging, weather checking, and/or ozone cracking
— these show up as tiny cracks in the rubber surface on
the sidewall of the tire. If the cracks are less than 1/32"
deep, the tire is fine to run. Between 1/32" and 2/32", the
tire is suspect and should be examined by the MICHELIN
dealer. If the cracks are any deeper than 2/32", the tire
should be replaced immediately.

Why risk your life, if the tires are over 5 years old and have any checking in the side walls, buy new tires, reguardless of tread left.

I feel that cracking sidewalls are an indication that the flexable life of the rubber is disapearing! So replacement should be an upcoming decision & hopefully sooner than too later!!! IMHO
I have never heard or read a document indicationg measuring a sidewalls crack depth, very interesting but of no interest to me personally because of my above opinion!!!!

I recently noticed that the sidewalls of my TT tires were cracked. The cracks were running perpendicular to the rim/tire edge and parallel between the lettering on the sidewall. I didn't check the depth of the cracks. The TT is 2 yrs old. The DOT on the tires showed them as 3 yrs old (1 year old before being put on the TT - didn't know any of this when I bought it that way). All that I have read on here says to replace if there is ANY cracking and if the tires are 3-5 yrs old.

The old tires were Greenball TowMaster V. I contacted a local tire dealer (America's Tire - in CA), and talked to them about it. They contacted Greenball about the warranty (two years from date of purchase of the trailer). Greenball agreed to give me 50% credit for my tires and upgraded my tires to Transmaster (10 ply). The DOT for the new tires is May 2009. The dealer also threw in a free spare Transmaster. You might want to check to see if the tires are still under warranty.

My tools are eyes and fingers, I look at them all around and feel them all around to see how they seem to be doing, and also look for that date code.
I don't like seeing cracks.YMMV

A tire dealer will have a depth gauge. Have them measure it for you.

Cracks in the sidewall is an indication the tires need to be replace.

The real problem is when they blow out a lot of damage can be done to the TT exceeding the cost of a set of tires.

In addition if you are on the road far from home you end up wasting a lot of time getting replacement tires and back on the road if one goes the others won't be far behind.
