Those HD year (AMF owned HD) was a disaster. And it took a lot of hard work and a great President went there and set on a Harley Davidson and gave HD a little protection and look at what happened. As Ross Perot said several years ago that sucking sound you hear is your jobs going South, guess the man was right. I think I read were the layoffs will be about a 1,000. GBY....

HD produced 100K units in 1996, and 300K units in 2006. How may bikes did they think the country would buy? The market was close to being flooded with HD's several years ago.

Until debt, both private and public, is considerably reduced there will be little improvement in the economic health of our country.
Now, add in the myriad of social problems to the pot and we have a real mess.
Basic economic theory also proposes that manufacturing, mining, and agriculture are necessary to create wealth. True wealth is not created by buying and selling stock on Wall Street.
Due to the decline of the manufacturing and mining segments, our economy will never see the heights of before. The average American income will continue to decline due to what is now called globalization.
The cap and trade legislation is the final nail driven into our economic coffin.

Why invest when the U.S. government are doing everything they can to hurt businesses by raising taxes (cap and trade), increasing regulation and nationalizing the banks?
This is one of those times to put your money in a hole in the ground and take a nice, long vacation. You’ll probably do better “going off the financial grid” than staying on it.

When the Harley people stop buying their hogs it 'really' must mean the economy is in trouble!

I'm not sure if this is the case everywhere but... I got the fever a month or so back and started looking at bikes. I found a nice used one that was sold out from under me while I was screwing around with my bank.(that is a whole other story)I went to a Harley dealer looking at new and was told they don't budge off of full retail. They still have the one I was looking at. They called me two weeks later to see if I was still interested. I laughed at them.

So there's the REAL reason people full time.
We didn't get away in time, daughter died, now have her two kids living with us, plus their three cats (as well as our four cats!)

The US has lots of tax on companies doing business here and they are forced to do business overseas. Congress is making it very difficult for private business and big business to operate.
Wait till the cap and trade bill goes into effect and estimated about 2 million jobs will be lost.
