If the fold down ceiling TV dies, can a regular LCD or plasma TV be installed or is it a several thousand dollar fix?

If you have a fold down TV I would guess it is already either a plasma or LCD. I don't know how they could make a CRT fold down. Give a little more info on the make of TV and a description. You could just go to Costco or some other place for the neww TV. My preference is Costco because they give a second year on the warranty free.

We have the flip down Sharp Aquos LCD in our Dynasty which is quite standard for today, it would be no big deal to replace or even a plasma, al though plasmas are not recommended for this application.

You should give more information with your question as to thye year, coach brand and what is in there now.

I can tell you from our experience, we thought our high end Sharp Aquos died after 18 months, it would not power up, it was dead. Come to find out, the wire harness at the back of the TV came UNPLUGGED. Taking the decorative panel off was a chore, but it reveiled the problem real quick. The weight of the harness just hanging with no support caused it to work loose. It was a quick fix that could have lead us to a premature replacement that was not needed.

Imagine what that little problem would have cost(out of warranty) if a tech would have had to find the problem? Monaco would have fixed it at no charge, but another off brand tech would have had to charge.

x eleventy billion.

go with LCD, not plasma. LCD uses less power & creates less heat...

anyone know of a good source for RV LCD TV mounts? either fold-down or specialty accomodations? Typical LCD TV mounts won't work given how they affix to the wall - not a good idea to drill into the side paneling & whatnot.

how are you guys affixing your TV's? Who has a larger one? I'm thinking a 26" and a 22", but those won't be lightweight.

I have looked for fold down LCD mounts and most don't look very practical for MH's without extensive modification to the ceiling and possibly air conditioning. Plus, when the LCD is in its storage position the back of the LCD is exposed and looks bad. Adding a panel to the back of the LCD further increases the bulkiness of the installation, not to mention possible air flow issues) However, the race is on to see who can make the thinnest LCD. Hitachi and Samsung (and others) have LCD panels that are about 1.5" (or less) thick. Maybe there is hope for a decent retrofit fold down system.

When you compare the LCD TV to the old CRT you will find they are very light weight. Where a 21" CRT can weight 50-70# my 32" LCD weighs less than 30#.

Thanks for all the valuable info. We are looking for a DP. Sometimes we see one with a fold down TV. I was worried that if the LCD or Plasma died, the replacement cost would be outrageous.

Sounds like replacement would not be a big deal.

Thanks,
Tom
