I'm not sure this is the correct forum but here I go.
Are we (DW and I) naive to think that upon retirement in the fall that we could find a volunteering opportunity in the Southwest this Fall or Winter?
We have been unsure about retirement date but finally have settled on mid-October. If we make applications now, does anyone have any idea if we will be able to find a place to volunteer that will accept us?
We are genuine newbies at volunteering. We are flexible regarding start date(s).
We haven't explored workamping and think we would prefer volunteering. At least that is the plan today, subject to change tomorrow.

I would suggest you give yourself a reasonable period of time to accumulate to your up coming life of "retirement". Retirement is a unique ambiguous experience for each of us and no two people will react or adjust quite in the same way. The idea, concept or expectations of what retirement will be like is not always the same as the actual experience. Personally I found that volunteering, unless keep in check, can become restricting like working if one likes to RV and move around the country. Just one persons experience. Enjoy your retirement what ever you decide.

Also check out volunteer.gov/gov as it lists many volunteer opportunities for most Federal Agencies (i.e., National Parks, Forests, Corp of Engineers, Fish & Wildlife, etc.) Also check out possibilities in a particular state that you wish to visit, such as state parks, etc.
We jumped right in ten years ago, started volunteering probably 6-8 months out of the year and haven't looked back! It's a great way to see the USA as you generally only commit to 3-4 months at a time which gives you time to see everything in that area, then (allowing yourself ample travel time) move on the next adventure. Our first volunteer position was with Alaska State Parks (our "trip of a lifetime" which we did three times and hope to do again one day!). Maybe we'll see you down the road . . .
