It has been several years since I traveled hwy 1 from 101 to Fort Bragg and than across 20 to Willets. How are the roads for a 40’ motor home with a toad?

Are you talking about going from Legget on 1 south to Fort Brag? I think that would be a very trying drive at best, I've been over it a few times with my 19'TT and no problem but it is narrow and twisty also steep in places. I don't have a 40" MH but if I did I don't think I would try it. Never been on hwy 20 but hear its pretty windy too.
Hope someone with a bigger rig can give you more info.

It's curvy and has some moderately steep climbs (mostly of several hundred feet) so it'll keep you alert but the scenery is well worth it.

Can't begin to tell you how bad Hwy 1 is from Leggett to Ft.Bragg. Tried is once in a 33' A w/toad. Once you start there is no turning back. Only a couple of spaces to pull over to let cars by. Lots of 10mph curves, narrow, windy. In other words, just horrible. Try 1 hr. 45 minutes for the first 26 miles. If you want to see a grown man cry give it a try. Other wise go to Willits and take 20 over to Ft.Bragg. It is about 30 miles and takes about an hour. Nice drive. 20 from Willits to Hwy 5 is not too bad. A little slow and hilly at the east side but otherwise ok.

Have ruled out 101 south. Now I'm only interested in 20 to and from Willets to Fort Bragg.

It has also been a number of years since my (now) wife and drove 20 from Bragg to Willets and all I can say is that it was miserable for us in our little Dodge Shadow. Such a windy little road. I felt like we did 25mph all the way. We had traveled 66 from Klamath Falls to Ashland OR in the same trip and felt the same about that stretch. It has been a while though and I was younger, so maybe I'd consider it a little more scenic now instead of being in such a hurry.

When we used to go up to Mendocino from San Jose on a regular basis, we had taken Anderson Valley (HWY128) to get over to the coast. Very scenic, but the road was so windy for so long. As a change of pace, we took HWY 20 from Willits to Fort Bragg and found while it's also quite windy, it's not for as long as 128 was. HWY20 has been our preferred route since, unless we want to stop by the wineries in Anderson Valley. So count me in the recommend HWY 20 camp.
As to HWY 1 south to Fort Bragg. Did it ONCE. That was enough. I'd consider doing it again going north (on the inside) but not south bound again. Scenic? You bet, assuming you can take your eyes off your white knuckles and the road.

Have done #1 from Olema to Leggitt with a suburban and 27' TT and really had no problems. Did it in the 70's with my Toyota FJ-55 Landcruiser and swore I'd never do it again, but I was going south that time..North is no problem, just watch out for big MHs going south and driving in your lane as they don't want to get too close to the edge and the passenger is going berserk 'cuz she's looking down a long ways.
