We want to go to Victoira Island, which means we would have to take the Ferry across. Will someone tell me what happens to the pets, do you use your own cage, we have two small dogs and a cat.
Thanks,

I'm assuming you mean you want to visit Victoria on Vancouver Island.
ON A BC FERRY BETWEEN THE LOWER MAINLAND AND VANCOUVER ISLAND -- If you're tavelling by vehicle, your pets remain in the vehicle and you are welcome to stay with them. You are also welcome to stroll them on the car deck, leashed of course. And you must clean up after them. You cannot run your engine while the ferry is underway, and your propane must be turned off and the tanks tagged.
If you're boarding as a foot passenger and you have a pet, there is an area on the car decks just for you and other foot passengers with pets. Not the most comfy, either.
Pets are not permitted on the upper decks.
The rules are different on the Prince Rupert to Port Hardy run, but I'm assuming you're not taking that journey.

I took that ferry years ago and, IIRC, pets are required to remain in the vehicle during transit, and people are not allowed in the vehicle area until the voyage is completed.
Either my memory is faulty, or the rules have changed since '97, but Sue must be correct.

www.cohoferry.com/main/ Web site for Black Ball Ferry Line. Goes Port Angeles to Victoria. You disembark almost in downtown Victoria. Pets restricted to car deck. You should have a look at BC Ferries also. You could cross to the mainland and drive back down the coast to Washington State or have a look at the Circle Tour. This is a fantastic tour of the Island and the west coast mainland. This includes Gibson's Landing. If not familiar, Google, The Beachcombers. The pet rules are the same on BC Ferries as Black Ball.

I forgot about the Coho ... my info was for the BC Ferry crossings between the Lower Mainland (Vancouver) and Vancouver Island.
We stay in our fifth wheel with our pets. Lots of people stay in their cars and snooze. Jake, our dog, likes taking a stroll on the car deck before we disembark. Ferry personnel often stop and say hi to him.

Most of the ferries I've been on have been in east coast areas. If there has been more than one deck to the ferry, the pet stays with your vehicle, or in a cage for the larger ferries.
& you are not allowed on the vehicle deck. Almost every time I've taken one of these ferries, the deck hands would tell me how he/they liked one of my dogs. (odd, but never two of them, never realized there were two). Or, the deck hands are alert to there being pets around.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

I don't know what ferry sue.t takes, but when I took the Port Angeles to Victoria ferry in 2005, people weren't allowed to stay on the vehicle deck. Our dog stayed in his crate in the MH.

Thanks for the information. We checked on this years ago and I thought the pets had to be locked in a room in a cage, so this is good news.
We do not know where we are going, just decided to head that way and make Victoria our goal. This will be the first trip we have not planned so far in advance so I will be scrambling for recommendations on where to stay and what to see.

If you are taking a pet across the border, you have to have a current health certificate. I have taken my cat across a couple of times in the past couple of years - she has stayed in the car the entire time, but I've seen dogs being walked in certain places on ferries - they vary according to the line. Most health certificates are only good for 30 days, and it must still be valid when you cross back into the USA. Check with the WA state ferry website, and the bc ferry website.

On BC Ferries they *prefer* you go on top, but if you chose to stay below nothing is said. Pets, however, must stay below decks. Most times we just take the time crossing as an opportunity to catch up on sleep in the front seat of the vehicle.
