If it's vacuum, you probably have a leak. Check the line looking for cracks, my old jeep had vacuum with plastic lines, kept getting leaks at the line elbows which were rubber. Easy and cheap fix when you find it.

The vacuum hubs are actuated like a retractable pen.....the vacuum clicks them on when you shift into 4wd, then clicks them off when you shift back to 2wd. Does your AC blow out of the vents correctly? The reason I ask is because the vents work off the same vacuum as the 4wd. If you can turn the 4wd switch without your AC vents reverting to defrost, you probably do not have a leak.

Have you made sure both of your hubs are set to auto? The hubs are 2 position....lock or auto. If they are set to lock, the front differential would be spinning which would cause the front drive shaft to also spin.

What about backing up in a staright line for about 40 ft? I've seen a few Fx4's get caught like that from time to time.

Dunno...

Vacuum operated Ford hubs are a well known maintenance item. Probably need to have the vacuum lines and controls checked and maybe dissassemble and clean hubs.

I tried backing, and drove all the way back from CA, using the ac. without any prob. How hard is it to dissassemble hubs? Is it possable to pull them off with a vacuum pump?

The hubs come off very easily. Once you have the wheel off, there is a single snap ring that holds the hub on. Sometimes you have to coax the hub off with a rubber mallet. Here is a link that might help:

You might also review the owners manual on engaging and disengaging the front axle. If you had it switched into 4-low, I believe the disengage procedure is slightly different from the 4-hi procedure.
