A coworker of mine drove a rural school bus to make money for college. It was not always a fun job for him. Once a kid gets on the bus, the kid was my coworker's responsibility. He was required to get the kid home/to school no matter what the kid did on the bus. That would lead to some nasty incidents. My friend found a solution, however. There was no rule that he had to let the troublemaker on to the bus, and since it was a rural route, kids just stood outside their house waiting for the bus. So my friend would drive right past the troublemakers and not pick them up. The kids learned to behave on his bus (or they knew he wouldn't pick them up the next day.

Good luck!

well then your coworker had one crappy school system. I drove bus for 5 years, if kids got in major fights, we got on the radio and had police on board usually within 10 minutes. We were specifically told we could not touch the children, (fine by me) they could kill each other for all i cared. Usually though other students on the bus took care of breaking up fights.

to the OP good luck, i did it for a college job, parking buses is actually easier then my car, due to all the windows

When I drove, rural area, if a kid gave too much trouble you could stop and kick them out.
Cant` do that now, too bad.

CONGTATS, Julie!!!

I once had a bus driver who held contests every week, one side of the bus against the other. whichever side was the quietest, those kids got a piece of candy Friday afternoon. Funny, I remember the contest, but don't remember eating any candy...

He didn't have that option (I bet he wished he did). At the time (it was a few years ago), his only option was to NOT pick up a kid.

Congratulations, Julie - you go, girl! I know you will be a success at whatever you decide to do. You're like the ladies I ride horses with each week - they are over 65 and still round up, tack, and ride these horses while I nervously approach the lesson horse I ride every weel and tack her up and gingerly climb on. I hope you have a lot of fun driving your "kids" to school, and most of all, may all of you stay safe, especially during this coming winter.

Very Cool Julie, I was going to do that a few years back, got as far as going to DMV for driving test, and backed out just decided it wasn't for me at that time. It is amazing driving those big things I never thought I could do it either. Now wait till the kid part comes......... Have Fun!!!!

My sister in law is a bus driver for the court kids.....She has them all convinced that their probation officers are on her speed dial......Once in a while, she has to write a citation but not very often....1 copy goes to the school, 1 copy to the parents, and 1 copy to the probation officer.

She loves "her" kids and would not trade jobs with ANYONE.......Incidently, she got the job because NO-ONE in the county wanted to transport these kids!.....On her first day, her supervisor told her to never let these kids know where she lived cuz her family could be in danger....She's driven this bus for 3 years now!
