Going to Gettysburg National Park 2nd week in October. I'm sure others have been there and we're wondering what campground is located best for touring the battlefields, etc. Please include any other "tips" for touring the area you might have. I get my best ideas from RV.net forums. Thanks.

I think you'll find (fortunately) when the replies come in you'll be hard-pressed to find a bad campground in that area. We stayed in Artillery Ridge and found it clean and convenient. I've read many other reviews of other campgrounds, and it seems everyone thinks theirs is the best. Good for Gettysburg! Enjoy you trip; it's a fascinating place to visit. As for "tips," we watched the movie Gettysburg, and read the book Killer Angels on which the movie was based before our visit. Then took a bus tour, watched the movie again, and did our own auto tour. When we returned to Little Round Top, I swear I could smell the gunfire. Camp on!

In my opinion, the campground most convenient to the actual battlefield area is
Artillery Ridge. The other campgrounds are located further out. If you ride horses, Artillery Ridge has a nice horseback ride tour through the battlefields.
Start off your tour by going to the Welcome Center as they have great information. We did the bus tour and then did the self auto tour as well. There was a couple next to us that hired a private tour guide as they were real history buffs. I know that they got a lot more information and interesting stories than we did, so if you are really into history it sounded as though it was worth it.

The Gettysburg Ghost Tour is also fun, very informative, and historically based. We very much enjoyed that as well as the bus tour and the auto tour. Sitting on Little Round Top and watching the sunset can be a "religious" experience. We also enjoyed both the Antietem Battlefield and Harpers Ferry - both are a relatively short distance away, and can be seen together in a single day.

I second Artillery Ridge, just came back from there last week. Skip the guided tour of the battlefield and drive it yourself. You will see more and save a bundle.

We got back from there recently. We stayed at the KOA and liked it. That is where we would stay again if we went back. Day trips would be to Hershey and Chocolate World, Lancaster and Amish Country, Harley Davidson Plant tour, and others mentioned above. Do some time at the new visitors center museum and show, hire a licensed tour guide for the battlefield, and also do the CD tour by car, see downtown GB. You can also find a couple of good wineries around there, eat a lunch and dinner buffet at General Pucketts and X2 on Dobbins House..

You will learn a lot from a battlefield guide that you don't see by yourself or hear on the CD - a whole lot...We did both and the guided tour was really worth it.

Learning about Gettysburg and what happened there was very educational for me. I am really glad we made the trip. We spent a lot of time hiking and touring the battlefields.
