We are going to be in that area in late October and would like to take the coastal route from the Freeport area up to High Island and on to Port Arthur. Will that take all day? 
I guess the alternative is through Houston, but would really like to see the coast through that area and I'm trying to decide how long a drive like that will take.

At High Island you will have to go to Winnie to get to Port Arthur. When you get to Winnie take Hwy 73 to Port Arthur rather than getting on IH 10 thru Beaumont. Much more direct route, mostly four lane with little traffic although they are re-surfacing parts of it and it is down to one lane in those areas, but traffic still moves good. Yes, you can do this trip in six hours or less easily - you will get delayed at the ferry across Galveston Bay, but for how long, depends on the time of the week and day. (I assume that you can go across the ferry with an RV as I've not done it before). Hope this helps.

RV's are allowed on the ferry.
The route referenced by RAM is a good one even if headed east on I-10. You avoid the construction at Vidor (although the new lanes are open).

I second what RamTX said. He is right on with his advice. It is a beautiful drive up the coast, you will enjoy it. I go that way on my motorcycle to visit High School friends in Angleton, TX where I grew up.

Remember the Freeport to High Island area was heavily damaged by hurricane Ike a year ago. You will still see much damage. Once you cross the ferry on the Bolivar penisula, the area was destroyed. Some areas the buildings were wiped clean off the peninsula.

We also plan on going across Hwy 82 in LA... We have been along the East coast, FL, and most of the Pacific Coast,,, but have never been to the TX/LA Gulf Coast.

You can cross on the ferry witn an RV. We did it three days ago with a 40' DP pulling a car...... did not have to unhook.

We just returned home from our trip to TX/LA coast. Great trip with lots of good seafood eaten along the way. We took Hwy 87 from Surfside Beach all the way to High Island including the Galveston Ferry with no problems. Also Hwy 82 from Port Arthur to Abbeville LA. and the free ferry at Cameron LA. Just be sure to fill up with fuel before leaving Port Arthur.

NCBounder you got to see what was left of Cameron. Had you ever gone through there before? Two hurricanes did a toll on Holly Beach and Cameron.
