We left Friday and drove back to Helena, MT from Norris. The fire started from lightening and the park service intends to let it burn except where it may threaten structures. They closed the west shore road at Yellowstone Lake Friday for awhile because of smoke.. Last I heard it had burned around 15 sq miles (about 10K acres). It is mostly back-country and temps are dropping well below freezing at night. Snow will be falling in the high country in a few days. I doubt it will become a significant problem.

We left Fishing Bridge Saturday morning for West Yellowstone. They then closed road that afternoon. Monday we couldn't get through park to get to Cody. So we had to basically go 250 miles around through Billings, then over to Laurel, then down to Cody. I would never have been able to take such a beautiful drive up 191 through Gallatin pass, that made it more tolerable.

We were at Fishing Bridge thru the 27th, we got re-routed thru to the north entrance from the west due to the road closure when the fire jumped the road between West Thumb and Fishing...it sucked at 6pm to now have a 4-1/2 hour drive ahead of us. Glad we saw most of what we wanted in west Yellowstone, cause we didn't head that was again, and they closed the road for 2 more days after our re-direct, then we headed home...sounds like it's still a problem in the park.
Sad, but that's nature and we did get some excellent pictures of the smoke one evening at sunset.

We got lucky, and they reopened the road on the 27th for us to get to the West Side. It had us concerned that we might have to leave the park, after driving some 2000 miles to see it.
