Do newer RV Diesels have all the emission filters that 2007 and up pickups have to have? If so, are people having as bad an experience with the filters on the large diesels as with the smaller pickup ones? Problems such as markedly lower mileage and clogs? Any ones to really be concerned with? I have never even thought of it up till now in our search for a Class A to replace our pickup/5th wheel setup. We're looking at used ones and have considered a few 2008 models. It might make a difference to us if they have to have the DPFs and have the same problems as their pickup cousins.

Yes, diesels built after 1/1/07 all have particulate filters.

But, as these engines are also built and installed in OTR trucks, I am not sure of the correlation between issues with PU engines and these engines-- I have no first hand or statical, FACTUAL information. But I have not heard the truckers screaming about them. And with the hundreds of thousands of miles they pile up, were there widespread problems, we WOULD hear about them.

AND, many 2007 and newer larger engines actually show an INCREASE in MPG over 2004-2006 engines. Caterpillar shows a 4% increase for their C7 and C9.

Also, there are some 2008 DPs out there with the older 2006 emission engine in it, as the RV manufacturers stockpiled the older engine. I know that Monaco was still building with the older ISL in 2008 and have heard of others. Just check and see which they have, as the RV model year has nothing to do with the engine installed.

Maybe true for CAT's Brett, but definitely not my experience with Cummins. No problems with the particulate filter, but Cummins came out with a reflash about a year ago to solve a surging problem. My mileage went from the 7.2+ range to 6.7-6.8. Others on the Cummins boards reported similar drops when the EPA 07 engines were brought in, and again when the reflash was done. Cummins doesn't want to hear about it and consistently denies the problem exists.

How do you determine the engine model year versus the coach model year? This is the first I've heard that they could be different. I was just assuming they would be the same. Do you just get underneath and see if you can find the DPF? What is mentioned here about the drop in mileage on Cummins engines has definitely been the case with the Internationals (Powerstroke) in the Ford pickups.

Most accurate way to determine ENGINE build date (and therefore EPA specs) is to call the engine manufacturer with the engine serial number.

Caterpillar: 877-777-3126

Cummins 800 343-7357, 5

I always thought that CAT was going for the best fix to meet the new standard but alas they got out of the OTR engine business. and this was after they made an 8 speed transmissible available.

Have an 08 FRED chassis w/Cummins 6.7 and all kinds of EPA stuff. Almost 27,000 mi and no complaints. It does have a regen feature to burn out the catalyst but I have not seen it run yet and neither has the previous owner (I asked him about it). So no problems so far....

Mpg from the previous owner was 12 @ 60-62 not towing. I'm seeing 10+ towing and running closer to 62-65.

We have an 08 Winnie Tour on a Freightliner XC chassis with a Cummins 400 ISL engine with new EPA emissions. I have gotten over 8 mpg over the past 22,000 miles with no problems at all. The regen feature has not yet run to my knowledge. Interestingly, the 400 Cummins seems to be getting at least as good MPG as our smaller 2004 Meridian with the Cat C7 engine, so I am very well pleased thus far.
