I have a 2002 F350 SRW V10. I had the tranny serviced a few weeks ago, and ever since I have this very annoying "vibration" sound coming from the underside of my truck when I hit 2100 RPM's. I have had 2 different shops look at it and neither can figure it out. I thought it was connected to the tranny, but the tranny shop has assured me everything is OK.

We just returned from a 3,000 mile trip and the problem didn't get any worse, but it didn't get any better. I have clamped every heat shield on my exhaust and it hasn't helped. I have spent countless hours under the truck with a rubber hammer and cannot replicate the noise.

I have found several complaints on-line about the bell housing inspection cover vibrating on these V10's. Problem is, I don't know what they are talking about or where it's located at.

Anybody have any ideas? The noise sounds like it's coming from under the passagner seat at exactly 2100 RPM's, which happens to be the RPM's at 65 MPH cruise. My performance is not affected, just this noise.

Have a look at the universal joints on the drive shaft.

The inspection cover is at the "bottom front" of the bellhousing facing the engine oil pan. Not the little rubber plug at the bottom.

Can you duplicate it in Park by raising the RPM????

If not just remove the inspection cover and go for a ride. If your noise is gone you found the culprit. If not it still could be an exhaust rattle. Check the exhaust hanger and bracket on the extension housing of the trans. Sometimes the bracket can crack.

Worn out center carrier bushing on the driveshaft can cause that kind of vibration, as can a bent or out of balance driveshaft. If it also makes a 'clunk' going from park to reverse to drive, a u-joint could be bad.

That's how I diagnosed the buzz on my '00 several years back. My fix was to reinstall it with a dose of RTV. It hasn't been off or vibrated since..

Sorry I have to laugh a little because I have the same noise with my V-10 for years and nobody has figured it out. First off mine only makes the noise when its cold out and its at 1750 rpms exactly. Its not ball joints, driveshafts etc.. its just a noise, there is no vibration or anything else involved and like you it does not affect the performance at all.

I have had it to the dealer who replaced the Y pipe, put hose clamps on absolutely everything and its still there. They even had multiple mechanics take a crack at it.

I have also read other sories and did bend the cover a little as suggested by many on the bell housing, still nothing.

The hard part is that it will not do it just sitting in park or neutral and revving up to that rpm, only while driving and only when its cold outside

My problem is only when I'm driving. I have put the truck in park and rev'ed up the RMP's, I have even put it on a frame lift with the tires off the ground running at 2,100 RPM's and still cannot replicate the sound. It only comes when the truck is "under load".

I believe my u-joints are OK. Now that I know where the inspection cover is, I'll give that a try.

By the way, I have posted this same question twice on the Ford Truck Enthuasist (spelling?) web site and not a single person responded. Goes to show you us RV'ers are always eager to help in any situation!

I had a similar noise. it was the exhaust heatshield around the Y-pipe area (on the pipe). either install a large hose clamp or remove the heatshield.

Mine sounds just like a heat shield rattle so its the first place I looked, tried hose clamps, wedging stuff in, bending the shield etc.. nothing. Thats when I took it to the dealer to have him take a look. They must have put a hose clamp on everything, I mean there were like 50 on them underneath on everything but still the noise. Its frustrating and like your problem it only is during a load. Let me know if you have find the answer

I took the bell housing inspection cover off, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I am thinking it has something to do with my exhaust system. The truck has to be warm before it starts making the noise.
