About 15 years ago I bought the nicest camping mat at a now-defunct RV store. I have no brand name or tag. It was about $60-70 if I recall.

It's the best mat ever, and has held up to almost weekly camping every spring, summer and fall. Lawn chairs, dogs, kids, and picnic tables set on top never damaged it in the least. It's as good as new, lightweight, dries quickly, and can be hosed off easily.

It's very similar to the rubberized shelf liner, but thicker and stronger and has never torn or stretched. We fold it up and toss it in a large plastic trash bag in the storage compartment.

Check http://www.rvawningmats.com. They also have some pretty decent prices on mats.

We bought cheap outdoor carpet at Lowes, its still working well after 10 years.

If I had it to do over, I would probably go with a canvas duck tarp. It could do double duty.

What size mats do most of you prefer, and why? We're just getting into camping again and are needing a new mat.

We like having one 'bout the same size as our awning, that way entire space under the awning is covered by a mat. Obviously, though, everyone is going to have different ideas/preferences for this.

That is actually why we recently bought a new mat - when we traded up to the trailer we have now, the awning 'grew' some, so naturally the mat had to 'grow' some as well.

Was just looking at that rvawningmats.com website, they have some nice stuff there. We have a mat almost exactly like what they sell, highly recommend them.

Center Hill,FL is a small town in west central FL. A business there sells lawn chair type material that makes mats that last and look good.
I don't remember the business name but it is a very small town.

Yes, but the other awning mats are so lightweight and don't "hold" the water like the artifical turf - they allow the water to go through them.

As far as the dirt - sweep most of it off and you can hose down when you get home and they dry quick and stay light.

The artifical turf holds the water and you can't really sweep off the dust and dirt. plus, over time with ours, the black backing starts to crumble and make a mess everywhere too.

I second this! I went cheap with our toyhauler and just did the astro-turf thing. If I had burned the edges, that would have eliminated the green pieces everywhere, but I still would have black flecks all over. I thought I could go cheap because I could just store it in the garage and it wouldn't matter if it made a mess - WRONG! It was horrible. And Lord did it stink when it got wet!

I bought the patio/awning mats the next year and have LOVED them. Lightweight, easy to handle (my 9yr old sets them out)and very easy to clean. Shake/sweep the dirt off, and then hose them down at home if they get filthy. Set them on the grass so the air can flow around them and they dry in no time flat.
