We will spend Jan and Feb in Kissimmee this winter. Other than the theme parks what are other things you enjoy doing in this area. I would travel 50 miles or so to see or do interestering things.
Thanks for taking the time to reply in advance.

Do you like baseball? Spring training. There are many major league teams nearby. The Tigers are just over in Lakeland....

Happy Jim, You have got to branch out farther. The gulf coast is 80/100 miles west. Then you might be able to catch a space launch at the Kennedy Space center on the Atlanta side. Keep an eye on the strawberries a few miles south in Plant City. Just go to the tourist center. You will find more to do and see than you have time for.

North of Apoka is Seminole State Forest, one of my favorite spots. lots of nature by car, bike, or foot, good spot to creek fish. Have to call and get a permit and lock combination.
St. Johns River is also a favorite. Fishing or just boat riding. I've rented pontoons out of Highbanks, near Deland. Wekiva river Tributary is good fishing or nature watching.
Astor is a nice-rural area, Ocala National Forest is huge, has a free target range.
Enjoy

I lived in Orlando when Kissimmee was just a small town south of Orlando; now it's just another part of the metroplex.
Gatorland is always good, if you haven't been there before.
Tupperware used to be headquartered, don't know if they do tours.
The Space Coast has already been mentioned. Do the Black Warrior drive on the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge while you're out there.
Take an airboat ride up or down the St. Johns River between Highway 50 and SR520, very well worth the $20 or so per person.
Visit the Everglades, should have a lot less mosquitos during the winter months. Take a boat ride to see the only crocodiles in the wild in North America.
Visit the snake serpentarium in St. Cloud, another used-to-be sleepy little Central Florda town that's now just another Orlando suburb. They have tours daily with snake milking at 12 noon and 3 PM (if memory serves me).
Have fun!

For something a bit different, go to the Disney headquarters. It's not open to the public, but you can go into the main entrance hall before you have to cross security. The building is about 6-7 stories, and they have an open atrium that you can access. In this atrium is probably the world's largest sundial, but it looks like a huge piece of modern art. What is amazing though, is how accurate this thing is. I had just set my watch to the second, and this sundial could tell you the time just as accurately.
Also, if you have never been to Orlando before, you will be amazed how flat it is. However, if you drive to the east coast, along the way is Central Florida's 'Hill country', which are some of the lowest hills I have seen.
Never miss an opportunity to walk on the grass.
