Snowfether wrote: So many post warnings of them becoming money pits and time gobblers. I'd like to know more positives. Do you REALLY have to spend every spare dollar on them? Understandably, you've got yourself a vehicle AND a house to maintain all in one....but goodness gracious...we haven't spent near the time and money on our stick house and Explorer that many of you seem to spend on your coaches.
Just wondering if your life is consumed by everything motor home! We just took possession if our "new to us" Newmar and shudder to think that it's a work in process on a daily basis. I still wouldn't even THINK of not owning her but want to be able to have a life outside of "Lacy Lucy". Having named her now, she's a member of the family so I guess if we're going to feed, bathe and travel with her, we'd better be ready to spend some time and money on/with her huh?
This post is all tongue-in-cheek fun. We are SO ready to get back into this lifestyle with all of you!!

I had a co-worker tell me before I bought my first RV in 1988 to expect to work on it 2 hours for every 1 hour I use it. My first thought was, no way since I'll be purchasing a brand new one. After owning 3 new coaches I find he was very low on his 2 hrs for each 1 hour estimate. But of course I wouldn't part with the coach and have to go back to motels/hotels and all their bed bugs, dirty linen, and uncleaned rooms.

I COULD HAVE WRITTEN THAT POST MYSELF! I agree with you 110%, and after all... IS THAT CALLED TERAPHY (sp?)
also I treat mine as an airplane.... FOR X HOURS OF USE, YOU`LL NEED X HOURS OF MAINTENANCE!
ENJOY!

We’re full-time RVers that make a portion of our living writing for the RV industry. As such, we’re pretty immersed in the “RV lifestyle”. In my opinion, the vast majority of motorhomes will never be trouble-free or inexpensive to own. They are complicated pieces of equipment that have to be maintained and repaired by trained technicians and mechanics that typically charge around $100/hour. People that own homes and expensive boats are in the same situation. It’s the cost of ownership.
That being said, it’s always cheaper (and easier) to maintain a motorhome properly than it is to ignore things and simply wait until something goes wrong. And in spite of the seemingly endless list of problems you read about in these forums, the vast majority of RVers love their motorhomes.
Tonight, we’re staying in a leaf-covered forest in Maine. The moon is full and the air is crisp. Because its early November, we have the whole campground to ourselves and tomorrow, we can pick up and go wherever we want in all of North America. All in all - not a bad trade-off for some annual maintenance and the occasional repair bill.

Honestly we own a 2002 Allegro 31DA. We have travled 28000 miles in it and except for a chipped tooth on the main slide drive gear we have had NO problems. But again Quality is Quality.

We own a 1996 work in progress.Had it 4 yrs now.I call her our "cabin" It helps if your mechanically inclined! Everytime we take her out we have problems. From the start we tried to "stay ahead of the game" maintenence wise. Its got to the point we were afraid to take her out of the barn. My husband shakes when he looks at the "cabin."We now have a RV savings account" $200 a month for repairs. It probably should be $400 a month. Good Luck

We purchased our 06 DP new in 07. We have had very few problems. Generator had a small oil leak, repaired under warantee. 2 freighter recalls taken care of. We had one small repair done at a shop. We love the motorhome as it is. So far we haven't wanted to change anything - except for how often we get to use it. DH takes care of all the up regular upkeep. Enjoy your new toy.

Lots of truth here! A problem arises at home I put it off. If problem is even anticipated in the rig I'm all over it!

We've been RVing about 4 months/year for 12 years now and are on our 3rd 5th wheel. The first one was what I'd call a lemon (Holiday Rambler) but the next 2 have both had some problems too.
Just expect a little trouble and fix it when it comes up. It's still better than sitting around the house all year!
