Our RV up front is noisy. Our Garmin 255w does not put out a lot of sound and it is easy to miss what she is saying.
Garmin (and TomTom) have units that will hook into your FM radio and permit louder volume. We were looking at the Garmin 755T.
Garmin tech tells me you have to tune your FM radio to an "empty" frequency/station (lots of static) for this to work. So, as you drive and more FM stations come in on your radio, you have to keep tuning to an "empty" frequency/station.
So, who has any brand of GPS that has the FM radio option and how do you like it?
Did you have to upgrade your FM antenna on your coach? Are there any tricks we need to know about?

we have a nuvi with FM transmitter. i like it very well, most times i keep the voice prompts turned off but when i do use them, being able to hear them over the truck radio is very convenient and works very well. as your traveling you do have to change stations as you pick up new ones where there were none before. another benefit is that the GPS can be used as a MP3 player. you can load music onto a SD card, play it through the FM xmitter and the music stops as the GPS gives prompts.

I never found this feature to be worth much. Picking up new stations makes you have to reset it. PITA.

has anyone tried plugging an external speaker into the earplug jack on the side of the Nuvi?. I have the 680 and have the same problem, hard to hear, not nearly as good as my 2610.

The radio transmitter is just ok. The FCC put a limit on how much power those transmitters can put out and it ain't much so they constantly drop signal. You can buy a set of portable powered speakers and they work great.

I would get something like this: AES-4 10 watt 12vdc amplified speaker and wire it in or use a cigarette lighter adapter then plug it into the earphone jack on your GPS.

does your stereo have an aux in? that would be way better. put some music on your sd card use it like an ipod. and when she talks it mutes so you can hear here loud and clear

Here is what we did: Bought a new Garmin 755T from Costco for $200. Bought an Altec small battery powered speaker from Radio Shack for $39 which will connect to the 755T to boost the spoken instructions.
We shall see.........

PS: The 755T takes SD cards.
