Hi Fellow Rv'ers...
We are traveling for the first time southbounbd on I-5 thru California with our 40 ft 5th wheel. We would love to enjoy a taste of the Redwoods and any other wonderful sights other Rv'ers have found spectacular about the state of California? I hear Hwy 1 is NOT the place to travel with a big rig. Thus, we have decided not to take the RV to Hwy 1.
Does anyone have any helpful suggestions as to which roads are wide and comfortable to drive with a big rig that would take us close enough to park and camp to Hwy 1, but where we can do day trips by car to see bits and pieces of the coastline?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much in advance,
Cheryl

After I get you answer I will be able to better help you.

Since you haven't departed WA yet, may I suggest that you head towards US 101 at Olympia, then when you get to US 101, take it all the way along the OR coast into CA. You'll see the OR coastline and lots of redwoods down in CA. Somewhere down around Santa Rosa area, or north of there, you may want to take a run out to CA 1 in your TV. But leave the 5ver behind, I don't think you will want to drag it along with you on your way to CA 1 or on that highway itself. By all means drive CA 1, it's a great road with lots to see, just leave the 5ver behind somewhere. Other folks may have some other options such as taking I-5 all the way south to Grants Pass or thereabouts before heading west to US 101, but I like the OR coast. The SP's are great in OR, reasonably priced and not crowded this time of year. Have a good trip!

Avenue ofthe Giants in northern Ca. is a must. It's about a 20 mile very small loop off I-5. There's a couple campgrounds there, no hookups that I remember. It's the redwoods at their best. Don't miss it.

Do you FISH ??? Right at the Ca. border the Smith River is a MUST do!!! Stop at one of the very low priced campgrounds and pick up some business cards of the local fishing guides (SALMON) they will pick you up at the campground and take you on a very very beautiful (bring Camera) ride down the Smith river and you might even get a couple of Salmon!! Just dress very very warm!!! Best trip I have ever been on !!! rvtommy
