I am going to be traveling from San Antonio west towards Fort Davis along Hwy 90. I am a newbie with a 5th wheel and my first diesel engine. Should I be concerned about diesel availability in this less than populated area of Texas? I know Big Bend has diesel, certainly at a hyped price, but I was wondering about along the way.

Thanks in advance, Tom

We were just out that way in the spring. Longest stretch, no diesel, I saw was Del Rio to Sanderson, about 120 miles. Just fillup @ Wal Mart in Del Rio and you should have no problem.

I believe that fuel is also available in Langtry.
If not, no problem, it's only 121 miles from Del Rio to Sanderson.

Your best prices will be in Del Rio and Alpine. If you're headed to Big Bend, then fuel at Marathon before heading south. You'll probably need some fuel, before heading north, unless you have an aux tank.

From Marathon heading south on US385 to Park Hdqs is approx 100 miles
To Rio Grande Village from Park Hdqs is another 25 miles, up to Chisos basis is about 12 miles, down to Castolon is about 30 miles and west to Study Butte is about 25 miles, then another 80 miles from Study Butte to Alpine.

Best prices in BB area will be in Study Butte on the west side entrance. There is one station that has diesel in BBNP and that will be just west of Panther Junction, but it's anywhere from 50¢ to 75¢ higher.
There is also fuel in Ft. Davis, but top off in Alpine.

If you don't have an aux tank best know exactly how many mpg you get and how many miles you can safely go between fuel stops. It's one thing to run a gasser out of fuel, it's an entirely different matter running a diesel out of fuel. It not something you want to do.

The best fuel prices in that part of TX will be in Ft Stockton and Van Horn, but both of these are along I-10.

Getting a 5er into the Del Rio Wal Mart pumps can be a problem. You can also fill at HEB. They have slightly easier access/exit to the pumps. Sanderson (the station on your left as you leave town heading north) not only has cheap fuel and easy access, it also has a good lunch counter inside.

We just made the loop from Ft. Davis to Alpine into Big Bend NP, out to Marathon and east to Del Rio. I can't help you with the exact prices on diesel, but here is what the gas prices were.

Ft. Davis gas was around 2.60. Alpine was around 2.50. Big Bend was 3.25 - not sure if they had diesel there. Marathon - 3.05. Del Rio Walmart was 2.35 with your Walmart gift card discount! Cheaper than here at San Antonio!!

Don't worry about the Walmart in Del Rio if you hit it at slack times. We had no problems with our 33' Class A towing our Saturn. However, it is busy at times, since it was the cheapest around. Just hang out in the Wally parking lot until things slow down!

I would try to by-pass Marathon and the park for fuel!!

I know that these aren't diesel prices, but I would guess that you can figure out what a close diesel price would be.

We had 5 beautiful days there - blue skies, not a cloud in the sky and in the low to mid 80's!

Enjoy
