Anyone know when the new editions of the "Milepost" and Mike & Terri Church's "Alaskan Camping" will be available? Thanks...Jack

Jack, the Milepost usually is out in the spring, March/April time frame each year. The Church book, Alaskan Camping, is not published every year. 2008 is the 4th edition and the last one I have. You can get on their web site and read any updates to it. www.rollinghomes.com
The Church book is excellent for camping sites with honest comments about the places. The Milepost lets the advertisers write their own narrative about their business and some of the owners have very active imaginations. The terms "world famous" is usually only in the owner's mind. LOL
On edit: Another excellent source of info on the north is from www.bellsalaska.com In recent years they have produced many smaller publications, many of them free and available to pick up along the highway at businesses, visitors centers, etc. Tim Bell, the publisher of the many brochures, grew up in the Muncho Lake area as his parents owned one of the road houses in that area when he was a youngster. The booklet, the Alaska Highway is good, as well as the one on "Whitehorse" and others. At one time they published a guide book on the entire Alaska Hwy but don't see any mention of it lately.

We found that if you have the Church's book, the Milepost was just extra weight and the loss of the money to purchase it.

The two books are very different in the info they provide on the Alaska trip. They are both an excellant aid to the trip.
Even the Church book says this---"Our descriptions of the destinations and routes in this book are inteneded to give you an idea of what the city or region has to offer. They are by no means complete, you will undoubtedly need additional guides during your trip."
If you are inclinded to dive along all day with little info about what is along the routes, mile by mile, then get some excellent info on campgrounds--just the Church book is good for you.

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

I agree with Luke...both the Milepost and the Church's book provide different focuses. The Church's book is good for finding campgrounds; the Milepost is good for a detailed description of stuff to do or see along the way. IMO, both are essential travel guides for the trip to Alaska.

Coming from someone who drives to and from AK every year for many years now, the Church book is a bit dated regardless of edition.
Milepost is good but with all sources of info, you must read it and take it for what it is worth to you.

We are planning our trip to Alaska, leaving in May. We were going to wait and buy the 1010 edition of MilePost next year.Should we go ahead and purchase the 2009 edition now? Waiting until spring would be a little late in the year, I would think.

Normally there isn't much difference from year to year but with so many of the road houses closing, a new one will be nice to have on the trip. The Milepost are fun to read for me so I would recommend getting a 2009 now, be reading and marking it up on places of interest and then order a new 2010 for your trip.
I tend to collect editions of the milepost, 46 at the present time. Believe I have one for every year I have driven the Alaska Hwy, starting in 1962. Twelve round trips to/from Alaska by RV, plus several more trips by car/truck and a few by small aircraft following the highway from the lower 48 north.
The Church and Bell publications, you could go ahead and an obtain, then checking their web sites before leaving to see if any updates are available.
