I know this topic goes around and round...but when I moved to my neighborhood 38 years ago the codes state exactly "shall not prohibit the parking of any recreational vehicle or camper by the owner"..this code was again amended in 2006.
We purchased our 39' MH (new)in August 2007 and immediately had problems with my neighbor behind me. Too big, estically unpleasing, noisy, smelly. We planted shrubs to help shield it..attached a hose to divert exhaust to my front yard when we started it up..upon starting it, moved it up in my driveway within 3 minutes (exhaust hose attached this whole time)and then turned it off.
They approached the village board, presented their case with pictures of my motorhome, saying the trees were too small that we planted, and we had plenty of money to get bigger ones, b/c we EVEN got a new car to MATCH the motor home, which was not the case.
After going through the board and the Mayor of our Incorporated Village...the outcome was as stated by the Mayor...If the two Villages within closest proximity had no RV restrictions than they would continue to allow it. This was March 2008. Sounds wishy washy to me but we had no choice to go along with it.
Since there were no restrictions we recieved a letter stating we were compliant and "presently there exists no violation of applicable codes relative to this complaint". This was March 2008.
Well, we all know the "squeeky wheel" saying.
So My husband and I go to a Civic Association meeting last night and one of the topics they bring up is RV's in the neighborhood having to get permits if you motor Home is OVER 30' and weighs more than 10,000.
Now I have to tell you, this is not a big MH community..there are a sprinkling of MotorHomes...and maybe 3 or 4 in my whole village that will fall into the larger than 30' catagory. So I know my squeeky wheel neighbor is the cause of the code change..esp. since the original code was amended last in 2006.
However we are a HUGE boating community. And I know for a fact that there are some boats stored on their front lawns, etc. for the winter that are pretty large.
Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to get them to have to get permits (at the Village Boards disgression BTW) but isn't this discrimination against me and those others wich the larger RV's?
Also those with large 5th wheelers do not fall under the new code..as it states "self propelled vehicle".
The answer is not simply to "store it"..as those who live on Long Island know thats almost impossible to find place for it,never the less one thats secure.
We have lived here 38 years, have an elderly mother 3 blocks from me, so cannot pick up and move.
The Motor Home was a dream we had, will most likely never be able to "trade up", so this is it for us. We got the MH with an open mind to enjoy it while we can (we both have some health issues, although not severe), so why can't they let us enjoy it while we can.
We have taken measures to soften the surrounding area for the neighbors, and even spoke with them all around us before we purchased it.We have never fought nor had harsh words with the neighbors behind us, nor any other neighbor for that matter. They went behind our backs.
I just can't help feel like I am discriminated against because of them.
In no way is it endangering the health, safety or welfare of any of the residents around me. I would never do that.
Sorry this is so long...just venting.
I am going to call Good Sam advisory now, I know they have the parking rights book.

It sounds to me like someone there has an agenda.......When we were looking for a new home I made it clear to the agent NO HOA'S NO GATED COMMUNITIES LOTS OF SPACE BETWEEN HOMES. I had to fire the first agent..she was not hearing what I kept telling her......the last day I refused to get out of the car...I asked her, was she hard of hearing and she replied No...so then I asked her was she just dumb and she said why? I told her why....

In your circumstances, I would think it would be worth consulting a lawyer. Shouldn't your RV be grandfathered, even if they change the code??
We're part-timing now, loving our cabin (fifthwheel) on the lake/at the beach/in the mountains/close to the city.

Storage yards are mandated for RV's in many places. Some gated HOA set up areas just for them. Keeping and RV on a private lot is a distraction to neighbors, and causes a drop in their property values. That's why the don't want them there, it's not you, it's the buyers not wanting to look at them. This is a country of majority rule, so unless you can convince them it does not drop property values, you are out of luck.

Is your neighbors objection to you parking or to you running a diesel engine???
I would not want my neighbor running a smelly, noisy diesel engine in my residential neighborhood. I have no objection to parking a large motorhome.

What ever happened to individual property rights in this country? If you neighbor doesn't like what to have on your property HE should MOVE. Make sure you support local candidates running for office who support property rights. Good luck in your pursuit of happiness.

This is not true, we are a country of laws, created though a representitive republic. Not majority rules.

I'm with Lj_cox, I too think that you should be grandfathered in as you were compliant before/if they decide to change the rules at this point.

Wow, responses all over the board. I agree with the grandfather response, the property rights response and that we are a country of laws. I disagree with the response about your starting and running your diesel as being what the neighbor objects to. If this is the case he must object to each and every diesel that he ends up stuck behind, next to or close to at stop lights. You only need to start your diesel once a month for a few minutes, not enough to cause any noise issues or order issues beyond being stopped at a stop light next to a diesel truck. I also agree you should consider a lawyer to protect your rights.
IMHO, it is a sad state of affairs when land owners have to put up with small minded neighbors like yours who are obviously jealous of what you have (re: the comments about the new matching car and all the money you have) as if that is any of their business.
Good luck with your battle. If you can get your motorhome grandfathered, your jealous neighbor has no leg to stand on and will have to keep his big mouth shut.
