I had permission to park in the lot at the VA Center in Little Rock AR. The security officer even watched me set up. About 3AM I get this knock on the door (more like pounding) and the security officer told me I would have to leave. I told him I had permission to park their. He told me to leave and go to a lot about 2 miles off.

In Carbondale IL about 4 years ago, I asked the store manager of the Wal-Mart is I could park over night. He said the store had no problem with it but it depended on what police officer had duty that night. He said they had one police officer that liked to chase all RV's off and would wait until after he knew you were asleep before he started pounding on your door.
The town must have gotten rid of him now, because the last time I went to Carbondale, they had a new Wal-Mart and the manager said overnight parking was OK.and I parked without any problem.

So far so good by calling and asking the store manager. Generally, I will only stay in a "Super Wally Mart" that is listed in their road atlas. I had one decline and I thanked them, no harm no foul. All other's asked that I park out of the way and make it no longer then one night (not a problem, if I want to camp I'll stay at a campground).

Howdy!

WNY_PAT, it was Lunenburg, VA. The sad part is we checked and could not fine any RV / Campgrounds within miles. When I asked the County Manager if there was a place near by if we wanted to return and do more research I was advised no there was not, not even a hotel / motel. She stated we should ask someone if we could stay on their personal property. So I Asked if we could stay at hers? She stated NO! What a shock.

I've only got two years in, but never been asked to leave yet. I was invited to stay at the Kingman, AZ Walmart by a very nice security guard. We stopped for a few things and were eating lunch way out in the parking lot when a knock came to the door. When I saw the uniform I told him we were just grabbing a bite to eat and would be out of there in a few minutes. He said to take our time and stay overnight if we wanted. Talked to him for about a half hour. I think we solved a couple world problem, too.

By a sheriff in San Mateo County and by one in Santa Cruz County. In both cases, it was right after dark.

I always ask at Wal-Mart & Sam's Clubs. Some local ordinances prohibit overnight parking. I check at some truck stops to as we had one Flying J near Beaumont, TX that told us RV parking was not allowed. Usually Truck stops like Flying Js have a RV parking area but that one was real small and only had a small truck parking area. It never hurts to ask first and not get asked to move about midnight.

We were asked to leave a rest area in Louisiana during an evacuation from a hurricane. We begged off as we had been in bumper to bumper traffic for over 12 hours and just couldn't go any further. The security officer said we could stay for 4 hours. Luckily his shift ended before the 4 hours was up.

Same here. We stopped only to buy stuff, knowing this Wal-Mart didn't encourage overnights. Ole Barney came 'roaring' over in his golf cart, caught us coming out the door and yelled that we could not overnight in HIS lot.

We about-faced, got back on board and drove away. (K Mart was glad to have us.) Called later and got an apology, but we don't go to that one any more. Kingman in general doesn't seem too RV-friendly.

I have read many posts about cities with ordinances against overnighting in parking lots. As a retired police officer, I know that most depts are busy with crime, so other than a complaint from a property owner, do the police really ask you to leave? Have you been asked to leave a parking lot?

Yep. I parked behind a BurgerKing one night in a blizzard and the teenie cashier thought I was casing the joint. Cop was nice about it. I mentioned heading for a rest area and he advised against that. (Rest area was packed) I told him I would be down on the river in the city park.

At the time, I was working 12 hour shifts and driving 60 miles each way to work. We got 12 inches of heavy snow. I got a good nights sleep and showed at work 4 hours early to cover no-shows. Roads were still nearly impassable the next night, so I parked out for a second night.

Yep - Pigeon Forge, TN. Pulled into WM in a driving rainstorm & didn't see the No Overnighting signs. Local ordinance & local cop tossed out 5 of us at midnight. Drove a few blocks, saw a Cracker Barrel & spent the rest of the night there.

More in keeping with your opinion, the WM in Watkins Glen, NY has No Overnighting signs in keeping with a local ordinance. But I was advised the local cops have better things to do than enforce it. That's not to say they won't get bored some night & decide to.
