Satellite, Internet and Cell Phone - What seems to work best for Canadians who winter in Florida? We're considering the stick for internet. Are there better options? We've been told that the roaming fees for cell phones are high. As for satellite, friends have suggested the dome one that automatically picks up the signal. There are so many to choose from and will our Canadian provider continue service if they know we're in Florida? Any imput would be appreciated.

Satellite = Definitely Shaw Direct (ex-Starchoice) works all the way into Mexico. Bell Express Vue's footprint in US is shrinking. Shaw Direct has RV/Away from Home plan.

Cell = Our (Rogers) home cell works in US. We leave it open for caller Id look-up BUT never answer calls ... we pick up messages free via Skype when on wifi or use our Distributel calling card at much cheaper rate for LD. We also have a Pay-as-you-go $9.99 Tracfone which we maintain the line all year long via time cards we load through their internet site. Tracfone will also forward calls (free of charge) from our relatives in Canada through a local number from major cities in Canada.

Internet = Recently purchased a Nanostation2 NS2 (from Ubiquity) and pick up free wifi signals kilometers away. Both Sony PSP and Ipod Touch are wifi capable and both now support Skype internet calling

6 months ago, I got Net 10 service, then I bought the broadband verizon card for my laptop (230,000 bps). (Free at Sam's club, and a $50 gift card to boot). Then my first ever laptop (Compac by HP-$380 Best Buy). Great computer.

To justify the $60/ month for service, I dropped my home phone and had the number moved to Net 10. Now I have all bases covered. Verizon has a 30 day satisfaction guarantee before your contract kicks in.
After 15 years of sucker service with cell phone contracts and slow dial-up, I feel like I've joined the 21st century. If I have cell service, I have internet service. Hasn't failed me yet although there are still a few dead spots in the US with no cell service.
