What if you decide after 6 months that full timing is not for the two of you?

All you will show for it, is a newer coach and PAYMENTS.

Keep the paid for coach for awhile and try full timing in it.

Thats DEFINITELY what I would do! But Im not about to attempt to go FT...now or ever

I have seen two or three newbys in the last three months asking about used DP for that price range so it seems there is a market.

We had an 05 gasser paid off that we traded for a killer deal on the Mh in our picture. I know, Monaco Br etc but who would have known. In any case we got an outstanding trade and a killer deal on our retirement MH.

One other thought is about financing. You might compare rates for new and used financing.

We got decent financing although we absolutely hated to finance we felt better keeping the money in our pockets at this time.

Your current coach's value represents about two years depreciation on the newer coach. If you want to incur the loss of value in the newer coach, then, whether you get 30K or 45K for your current coach should not be a factor in whether to make the move.

If that $15k issue is importent to your ability to acquire the newer rig, stay with what you have now.

Dennis;

I've read your posts since my becoming a member, and have grown to admire and trust your advice.

While what we say may influence your decision to some small extent, based on what I've read, I'm certain your decision will be best for you and your wife.

Buuuut, in this day of opinion, here's mine - I'm always for newer, better, faster if it is higher quality.

Last April we were in about the same place you are. We decided to trade our 1999 Winnebago Chieftain 36' DP which was paid off on a new 2008 Winnebago Tour 40'. The Chieftain was not giving us any trouble whatsoever. However, we were RVing a lot more and wanted more space and amenities. We now have dual pane windows, gas/electric water heater, auto start generator, fully automatic HWH jacks, in motion satellite, 3 HD tvs, power awning, sleep number bed, two furnaces and heat pumps, cummins ISL 400 with 1200 torque, etc. We got $40,000 for our Chieftain and they heavily discounted the new Tour. We will have been on the road with either the old or new coach for a total of 8 months during 2009. We felt now was the time for us to buy a new rig and we would get our moneys worth out of the coach. You have to decide what is best for you. In our case, I was concerned about keeping the old coach for another 5-6 years and the potential maintenance issues involved.

Only you can answer for you.

For me it would be (is) a difficult decision. We currently have a no-slide older DP. It is working out well for us and 2 medium sized dogs. We have talked about a newer rig with slides for full/part-timing.

So far, we are leaning to keeping our coach. It is paid for, we have no bills except our regular monthly expenses, and we like it that way. We would rather spend money on going places and doing things.

However, you never know. If we have enough cash on hand to buy a newer model, we might just jump.

Dennis, you didn't say, and I don't think anyone asked, will you be selling the stick house? And if you are, you could pay off the loan for the newer coach and have a few chips left to play in the full time game. We purchased a new coach almost three years ago but we were fortunate enough to pay cash after selling our old coach and the big stick house. Now the smaller house is paid for, the coach is paid for and we have a few chips to play the part/full time game. You only go around once so why not enjoy the fruits of your labor while you can.

Thanks everyone so far, for your responses. That's what I like about this site. Not only did I get fair responses, but some other thoughts to ponder as well. Financially, we are in good shape so payments are no problem. Retirement is a very DIFFICULT decision, since I've been working full time since I was 10yrs old! This, I think, is the real issue. I've always been kind of a risk taker and have usually succeeded in whatever I've tried. I am not sure which way I am going to go on this deal, but I did want to thank everyone who has responded. Your replies have given me more things to think about......happy travels...Dennis

well I'm late to the game but some advice my GrandDad taught me by his actions. Delaying "till sometime in the future" is bad. He waited 45 years to retire to his private land on his island. 10 years later he drops dead. He didn't risk it and lost.

The real question is: What should your full time coach look like? this particular "killer deal" may not be it. Write down all your "must have" "can't have" and "nice to have" items. rate each item 1-10 (especially the "nice to have" section). Then score your existing and potential other coaches against those items. Obviously you don't buy just on the raw data but it will give you sense of your thinking in a more black and white way.

Well, if your financially in good shape, I am sure you can give a big discount on an 45K motorhome if you get a killer deal on a 200K plus/minus motorhome.

What nobody mentioned so far, as your RV will be your home (either first or second) you can write off the payments, so that makes them sort of 30% cheaper. Compared to no write off now as you own free and clear.
