I was reading on one of the other forums concerning the proper method to jack up the trailer to remove or change a tire. Someone posted the lippert instructions to place a block of wood on the I-Beam and then raise it there. It cautioned about the gas lines that sometimes are routed close to the beam.
What is wrong with placing the jack under the axle directly under the steel square plate under the springs?? I have raised every boat and RV I've ever owned like this and never had a problem. You want to place the jack as close to the end of the axle as possible. This is why I put it under the springs. The tandem equalizer shifts part of the weight to the other axle and you only raise one at a time.
I like the idea of keeping it attached to the 5th wheel hitch and setting the emergency brake on the truck. How could this not be the proper way???!! It seems to work so well.

I too have read that Lippert (also Dexter) write up - then trashed as ludicrous!!! I lift my current 10K# fiver under the u-bolt plate as I have every pup,TT, fiver as well as every pickup and car I've owned since....well let's say a long time(50+ years). So far, never a problem and none expected. I don't lift my vehicles attached - this will add load to the jack plus with a fiver, might tend to twist things - which will not be a problem as long as nothing is open, like slides.
One item to consider is if you use a hydraulic jack with a small diameter piston - since most parts now seem to be cost reduced(thinner steel), that bolt plate might deform if you don't have a steel pad to spread the load

I also jack under the U-bolts. Doesn't lift the trailer nearly as much as under the frame.

I called Dexter about how to jack mine, and they said, "Jack with a bottle jack on the axle under the spring between the spring shackles." That is how I do mine.
Jacking on the frame won't work with my MorRyde suspension, it is so flexible the wheel just keeps dropping down, and the trailer keeps tipping farther and farther. No way. A few pumps with a low profile 8 ton bottle jack and it's off the ground easy.

WWAARRNNIINNGG!!
Lift unit by the frame and never the axle or suspension. Do not
go under unit unless it is properly supported by jack stands.
Unsupported units can fall causing serious injury or death.

Once I jack-up the rv via the axle between the u-bolts, I then place a jack stand under the I-beam frame as a precaution. I keep 2 jack stands in our rig at all times - 1 in the truck and 1 in the rv.
How would you like to be on the side of the road with your trailer supported on the frame by a bottle jack and have it blown off the jack by a gust froma passing semi? I'm sticking the u-bolt/axle method. pcm

With all of the newer "big rigs" these days, what do you do to change the center on a triple axle?
