Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am new to TT. When you hook up to sewer at the campsite, does the flushing go directly to the sewer or does it go through you tank first?
Also, I have seen references to a black tank pyramid. What is that?
Thanks,
Jill

You will get several diffrent opinions. The waste will enter the tank and flow through to the dump valve. I let my black tank get about 2/3 full and then dump it. When dumping it, use lots and lots of water and make sure to flush the tank well. I leave my grey tank open while hooked up.

It ALWAYS goes into your tank first and even when connected to a sewer line you need to keep the tank valve closed until it's near full. Doing otherwise will result in clogs with your black tank that are no fun to deal with. It requires that there be plenty of liquid in the tank to flush out the solids and leaving the valve open will allow liquids to drain off and leaving nothing but solids. For that reason using a LOT of water when flushing the toilet is the BEST thing you can do for your black tank.

And leaving gray tank closed to run after dumping black keeps your hose cleaner. I suspect we all have our own methods but leaving the black tank closed until nearly full is a common practice. I prefer to run some gray after dumping black so keep it closed too. A habit acquired for dumping at waste station.

Welcome to the forum. The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. You may get a few crusty curmudgeon answers, but by and large the people on here are great, and you'll benefit from a wealth of knowledge, much of which was learned the hard way. Pay attention to Skip's answer above - lots of water and do "not" open the drain valves until nearly full.

Crusty curmudgeons often answer the question that was asked.

As others have mentioned do not leave the black tank open to drain. A pyramid is basically poo that piles up on the bottom of the tank and if left to dry out can be very hard to get rid of. Our toilet is a straight pipe down to the tank so if I hold the flush valve open I can see how full it is or see if anything is piling up. I always have the grey tank shut also and drain black first then rinse the hose with the grey.
