As I type nthis, I'm on line using my air card. At home I have a cable modem which is costing me $50+ a month. What do I need to do to use the air card on the desk top machine? Air fits into a slot on the lap top.

You can get USB connected adapters that work quite well since you apparently have a hot spot close by.

A wireless router designed for data cards would be your best bet. I think the Cradlepoint MBR900 would be a good choice for you. The good folks at the 3G Store would be happy to help you get it set up. It would work well in your RV also.

3G store is a good choice, but make sure you check the router you are thinking about buying to make sure it is compatible with your specific air card. I recently upgraded from the PCM slot aircard to a USB aircard and had to get a new router. However, the speed increase was worth it.

You didn't mention how old your aircard is but if it has any age on it, you might consider getting a new aircard that is a USB style instead of a cardslot style. Being able to use our Sprint 595U aircard on both laptops and desktops was one of the main reasons I picked it.

Your probably way overdue on upgrading your aircard. As said above, a new USB type aircard will greatly improve your online experience. I wouldn't waste time or money on an adapter for the PCMCIA card, go ahead and spring for the new USB.

Don't know if I'm allowed to answer since my 'home' is an RV but we use a router for our aircard so we both can be online at the same time and no swapping. Maybe it would be different at your home?

an adapter for the PCMCIA is available, but check the costs of the adapter or the cradel point card router against the cost of a NEW USB cell modem,

it might be the easiest and least costly route to just get a new USB cell modem to replace the air card, and you will be able to use it on any PC,

If you don't want to go with a wireless router solution, would allow you to use both your computers at home, then you need to know specifically what type of aircard you have, and what type of expansion cards/serial ports(usb) your desktop has available. For instance, if you have an CardBus/PCMCIA Card and have an available PCI slot in your desktop, then an adapter solution could be as simple as an expansion card such as this. It's likely your Aircard is an ExpressCard, and if your desktop has an available PCI Express slot, then an example of an expansion card is available here. They also make front panel expansion boxes that slip into an available drive slot in your case, which is actually is little more convenient than having to access the back of the computer every time you need to insert the card.
