Cost of Travel in Mexico...

Like many I have spent time in Mexico as the tourist… buying this.. that ..and more drinks then I want to remember for me and everyone standing. And I was even pulled over for a seatbelt ticket in Cabo which cost me a quick $20 to the officer. One thing I still constantly read and am told is how you can travel and live in Mexico for so much less then in the US. Granted a recent issue is the reverse in cost of fuel… I am trying to understand the cost and what a non flamboyant traveler is budgeting for a few months in Mexico for two in a class A .

Thx Paul

One other issue I have is my DW ..if she becomes seriously ill or..? How much of a problem is it? Lynne is asking about a trip down south. Even though she is young she is on disability and has Medicare with AARP and I signed her up with MESA Air.

Living in Mexico vs traveling in Mexico are two birds of a very different color. It is NOT cheap to travel in Mexico in an RV, even by US standards. We find that the savings in fuel, is more than eaten up by tolls, so there is one point. We have found that in most areas, RV parks are at least as expensive and in most cases, more expensive than RV parks in the US, when you can find one, so that is another point. Shopping for any product in Mexico that compares to a similar stateside product is always more expensive. That leaves food and here it can go either way. If you are willing to buy where the locals buy and eat where they eat, then you will save money here. However, if you want the food to come from a supermarket and the meat to come from a boutique meat market, then you will pay dearly for it. Please don't think you are going to run down to Mexico and travel all around for 1/2 of what it cost you in the states, because it isn't going to happen. We do a lot of dry camping in Mexico, eat at the small local restaurants, shop at the local Mercado's and feel our total cost is comparable to RVing in the US.

Health care in Mexico can be very good, at a cost less than one would pay in the US, but in most areas, you will be miles from that good health care. The average health care is unacceptable by US standards and that is what is available at most small to medium sized towns and cities. We are lucky in that we have Mexican provided health care at the Mexican Military facilities.

The savings for most winter RV travelers to Mexico is in their heating cost. We save on our Northern heating expense for our house as we can shut down the heater. Everything else adds up pretty close to our total Northern expenses but it is WARMER. Warmer weather is the primary reason we go South.

We actually keep track of costs as we are on a budget. If you do extended dry camping on various ejido beaches at 60 -80 pesos per day you are probably looking at about 50 bucks per day including entertainment food etc. We never seem to spend more than a week or two in one place so for us it is a mix of higher end camp grounds, dry camping, etc etc. We see all we can see and sample the food everywhere although we rarely do upscale touristy restaurants. We successfully tour Mexico on a budget of 85 dollars per day including everything....food, fuel etc. One day you may spend 15 bucks and the next 150 dpending on if you have to feed the gas tank etc. We do this in a 22 foot class c motorhome. Hopefully this was helpfull.

John & Angela and crandle,

How does your Mexico expenses compare to home expenses if you did not travel to Mexico? What is/would be the biggest difference?

Croft, I think you are making a mistake in your budget. You need to stay in one place longer so you reduce your fuel cost and increase your liquor budget. I couldn't travel like that

It has been a few years since we have been home for the winter but I believe we would be spending more if we stayed home. Our friends like to go out for dinner lots and costs for entertainment and dining out at home are much higher.

We started fulltiming in 05 and spent 5 winter months in the La Penita RV park for 3 out of the 4 years. DW says it cost us about 80% of what it cost us to live in the US. We would leave the 5er parked, and ride the bus to Guad, and take week long trips in the truck staying in hotels. The savings was mostly in food and fuel costs, as we did most of our food shopping at the local supermercados.
