I have been reading some of the threads about heading south and when to take on water.

Does anyone else have a water heater that takes engine heat to heat up water while on the road? I have no idea which model it is, but it sure is nice to have hot water while on the road.

Otherwise the water heater is a propane only model.

Almost all water heaters are propane or electric....I hardly ever use propane to heat the water...99% of the time I use electric power to heat the water.

We have that option on ours it's an 04 winnebago minnie winnie,I believe the option is called motor aid, anti freeze/water circulates thru hoses around the hot water tank to warm the water inside the tank, also helps with cooling the engine

So why not just fire up the LP water heater if you need hot water while driving?

Out hot water heater is A/C, propane and heated by engine coolant. The same coolant that heats the cabin while underway gets recycled thru the hot water tank on its return to the engine to be reheated. Since we have a diesel, it can heat the hot water to over 140 degrees, probably even hotter on a long trip.

Our previous boat domestic hot water was also heated by engine coolant using the same method. All it takes is a simple heat exchanger that looks like a "U" and fits into the side of the heater and hooks up to rubber hoses to and from the engine, just like the comfort heater.

There are several companies that make heat exchangers that can use engine coolant.

THe V10 already has take off points use you can connect to. THese points are normally used for rear HVAC on the the vans.

There is no way my LP heater would stay lit while driving. My brother's Bigfoot had the "motor aid" or whatever it's called. it's great. You show up at the destination and you already have hot water. You have it en route too.

Ours has the loop that goes into the heater and it runs off the lines that run to the rear heater. At some point the water heater was replaced but they did not get the same one so our loop is just inside the cupboard and it can get real warm. I will replace it with the proper heater when this one fails.

We have that option on ours. It is great while traveling and it works excellent.

Yup our Bigfoot has it too ..... great option ...... the only thing that is missing in my opinion is the ability to use it in reverse to pre heat the engine in cold climates. If you were parked over night in below freezing temps and the water heater was on LP it would be great to flip a switch to turn on a pump to circulate the warm antifreeze back through the motor for an engine pre heat. I guess you can't have everything.
