In addition to better designs, I would like to see some innovations--and, preferably, some competition--in the appliance and accessory field. There have to be some better mousetraps out there than the same old Dometics, Norcolds, Onans, Atwoods, Sharps, Suburbans, etc. that have furnished our RVs for the past several decades.
'Outside the box' is a good way to put it, both figuratively and literally. Good post!
I agree, much more can be done to improve the overall quality in the RV industry. Better, lighter more durable materials can be used to build the rigs, with tighter quality control measures. As far as appliances, not sure what kind of improvement you’re looking for, aside from more competition. Of all things in the RV industry I would say the appliances seem to be the most robust and long lived. Overall they are light and work basically problem free. I’ve had very few minor problems with any Dometic Suburban or Atwood product. No experience with Norcold but do have a Norcold fridge in my new trailer and hope it is as problem free as the Dometics I’ve had in the past. All mechanical things can fail but most of the RV appliances offered are pretty light in weight, cheap and problem free. There can always be improvements but appliance are not the problem in the RV industry. I guess if a Norcold or Dometic fridge could open up by itself and hand you a beer that would be an improvement. All kidding aside, the appliances that go in a trailer seem to be well designed and the companies seem to be pretty innovative. Competition would be good and I’m sure many have tried or looked into it. I would guess many did not see opportunity to compete. It does seem to be a tough market to compete in.
As a business owner, if I were to start a new business in the future, targeting the RV appliance industry would be low on the list.
Maybe the government could fund some competition with our tax dollars to give Suburban and Atwood a run. It could be “The Appliance Option”
