I hope that this post does not create too much of a stir but I want to talk about WiFi connection service at campgrounds.

I presently am on an extended trip through Florida and having a reliable, decent connection, decent speed and at reasonable cost is important.

I have come to look at this service as a necessity just as water and electricity. Not all campgrounds provide the service and that is OK. I choose not to go to them.

My problem is with those that do have the service.

My experience has been ranging from great to terrible. You don't know what you are going to get.

As an example. I am at the Cape Kennedy KOA Kampground in Mims, Florida. Like all KOA's they avertise WiFi. Here, the service is "... 4 hours per day and 50 megs per day downloads" Also a content filter is enabled. The four free hours should be OK for most. I don't know how good 50 meg of download is and I am OK with the filter.

The problem is that the connection meter shows three to four bars but the internet speed is extremely slow. I have given up on trying to access web pages that I normally view almost instantaneously.

This is an example of "good and bad" service.

I have been at other campgrounds that offer free service but both the connection and speed is less that old fashion dialup.

I have been at some campgrounds that have very good service.

Also, I should discuss cost. I prefer that the cost be included in the price of the campsite as is electricity and water. That said I am willing to pay a reasonable fee for a good connection with good speed. I have been asked to pay from $1.00 to $10.00 per day. A few times I have paid.

I think that if an extra cost is charged, that advertising and websites should list the service and the exact cost.

With all I have said, I would like to propose that a "sticky" be started where we can post our experiences with WiFi service and cost at specific campgrounds. This would be a great service to me and I hope to others.

Thanks if you have suffered through my long post and thanks if you will add to this subject.

Hi ntar,

RVparkreviews.com does list wifi (but not whether it is included, or an extra price option) in the reviews.

Quite frequently the quality of the wifi connection you actually get ANYWHERE will depend on the traffic it's getting from other users. Pretty hard to come up with any kind of a constant for that factor. Good luck / skip

Some advertise WiFi, but it doesn't cover the whole campground. Sometimes range is quite limited to a hotspot by the CG office.

We gave up on campground wifi two years ago and switched to Verizon's Aircard. It works in 95% of the places we have camped. No more frustration.

If I understand the OP, the proposal is that part of the regular fee include WiFi. I definitely am not for this since we use an air card and do not want to be charged for the service and it is not fair to those of us who do not use it to be pay for what others use.

That would stop me from using that campground.

Welcome to the world of free service. Unfortunately you get what you pay for and many times, not even that. Generally the entire problem comes down to bandwidth. The more you furnish, the faster it is when there are many users, but the more heavy use it encourages, so the slower it becomes. Some parks just don't care, don't know how to do it better, or don't want to spend the money. What you're left with is either taking what you get or doing it yourself.

We chose the do it yourself route with Hughes Net, but it's because we probably boondock more than half the time, and we go to remote places like Alaska. In addition, our home services through telephone or cable are poor and expensive. Our solution fit us, but others will find their own solution through 3G networks or others. Do some research on what you want, need and can afford based on how you travel and then decide.

There's some tricks on Hughes too. For example, we get our service through a reseller, so we can get the satellite we need for Alaska coverage. Buying direct from Hughes gets you assigned to a bird and you have no choice, so you may not get service in some places you travel.

Chances are pretty good you are getting charged for WIFI service whether you use it or a phone card. The point is, it should work reasonably well over most of the campground. Most do not work at all. I would also like to see some sort of rating for WIFI service listed in the c/g bible or RVParkreviews.com.

If it is important to you, you really should get an air card. It is $2/day

Or see if your cell phone can be tethered to your laptop. This is what we do. It works great and I don't have to worry about CG WiFi. If they have it and it works, then great! If they have it and it's marginal at best, I will use my phone. We have a CG that we frequent often. They have Wifi and it works great at the pool and in the A and C loop. B loop is down a hill and it is very spotty! The owner came by my campsite one afternoon and asked me how I got connected.... she told me that it didn't work well in that location. She was really interested when I told her how I was connected!
