Would like advice from all the experts out there as to the best Rt. to take from Waterton Park to Banff. The choices are Provincial 2 or 22 which is shorter. Since we've never been up that way we have no idea which would be the better way to go.
TIA,
Judy

I would take 22 to Longview then 40 west through the Highwood Pass and up thru the Kananaskis Valley. All excellent 2 lane highway some of the most beautiful scenery this side of heaven

40 looks interesting, Glenn & Karen. Are there any big passes since we're in a gasser and towing.

Definitely take the Hwy 22 option. Hwy 2 goes up to Calgary and is a very boring drive.
One caution though for the Hwy 22 option: When you turn west at Longview you are on Hwy 40 which is CLOSED from Dec 1 to June 14 inclusive. If you are traveling in this timeframe I would still take Hwy 22 route but follow it all the way to where it joins with the TransCanada Hwy #1 and then turn west to Banff.

For more info go to Hwy 22 option

There is one major pass to climb, the Highwood Pass, which is the highest paved Rocky mountain pass in Canada at a bit over 7200 ft. Approaching it from the south is really not all that bad as it is a fairly long gradual climb. Going down the north side can warm up your brakes so be cautious on the downhill.
Here's a profile showing the pass : Highwood Pass

I agree. From the south you will never know that you have reached 7200 feet. Going down is steeper but not much. There are no sharp turns at the bottom of any of the descents.

Just a thought: if you take #2, you have the opportunity to visit Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. This is a World Heritage site, well worth a visit to see a Native American way of life.

Eh!

If you go this way, you can get around Calgary by taking 22X westbound (just at the south edge of Calgary) to Bragg Creek & then head north on 22 which intersects with TC #1.

Stvhans, when are you going to be at Waterton? We are going to be there from July 6 to 10.
We are taking 22 up but we are heading to Calgary (Cochrane) for the Calgary Stampede before going up the Icefields Parkway to Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper.
I see you are a neighbor in Henderson. We leave from Bullhead City and will spend time in Vegas beforre heading out.
Maybe our paths will cross.
Travel Safe,
Janet

Hi, Janet, We're getting there just before you on the July 1 and 2 and pretty much having the same trip as you going to Banff, LL and Jasper. Enjoy!

We might be adventurous and try 40. It looks really beautiful. Just hope our gasser can pull our car up the Highwood Pass! And I'll be using my navigator's brake on the way down -- you know the one -- the "you're going too fast" evil look!! LOL! Judy
