Torque wrenches aren't that expensive and yes I own one.

I torque the nuts 2xyear and if a tire has been changed/rotated at 25 mi, 50 mi and then 100 mi.

Have never found one that was a problem BUT just like checking your tire pressure, your oil in the TV, etc., it is cheap insurance.

I just go by the sound of my airgun, because I've been pulling wheels with it so long.

I torque them and recheck twice. After that they are a bear to "untorque".

I check mine with a torque wrench prior to every trip, anytime a wheel is unbolted, and every few days when on an extended road trip. You'd be surprised how often I have found one or two off by a few pounds. It is the side to side action of the tires/wheels as they make turns that loosens the lugnuts. It is a quick safety measure along with a tire pressure check, that can save you untold grief if you ignore it.

I knew a guy when I was a kid who always filled the gas mowers at his rental place with a lit cigar in his mouth. He always said that he never had a problem. That was true until the day he did. He was burned pretty badly.

It doesn't pay to play Russian Roulette with your safety.

I agree. One other thought: when a trailer is new, it sometimes happens that the lug nut studs never get seated properly. After some driving time and some side to side torque applied to the tires by turning sharp, a stud may then fully seat, causing a loose nut. A friend of mine had this happen on a utility trailer he just bought and the wheel fell off while traveling!

I torque my trailer and TV wheels. I also draw a line with a sharpie on the wheel and nut. A quick check to see if the line matches up on the wheel and nut, then the nut has not moved.

I own a couple of torque wrenches and torque my lug nuts on my vehicles and %er, boat trailer, and both of my flat bed trailers. I do not check them everyday, just after wheels have been removed and every couple hundred miles after that for 2 or 3 times.

I have my lugs and lug nuts marked with a bright color so when i do my walk around before heading out i can look and see if the lug nuts have backed off.

Prior to each trip, then every couple of days if doing extensive traveling (several hundred miles). Just one of my travel checklist items along with checking the tire pressure, oil level, windshield washer fluid, radiator fluid, etc.
