Yep, the Unibomber had a cabin in the woods over by Lincoln.
The Freemen were up by Lewistown.
The grizzly bears are quite active this year. I think the score at present is bears 3, tourists 0.
It certainly is a dangerous place!
BUT, "open carry" is legal, except for certain restricted areas (financial institutions, courthouses, schools, etc.), so our human crazies and weirdos are usually pretty quiet!
Assuming the Feds leave them alone, that is.

skipnchar wrote: Rest stops are generally a MUCH better option than retail parking lots. they're quiet, safe and at least is some states, quiet and secluded with special locations for RV spending the night where trucks are not allowed. IN kansas the RV locations are at the end of the stop area close to where you pull out and amount to a large circle around which RVs can park, use picnic tables, dump station and in many locations use the free WIFI and fill the FW tanks. I OFTEN stay on rest areas where staying in a parking lot is not my idea of a "good time" under the best of circumstances.
Good luck and enjoy the trip / Skip
Kansas rest stops are the nicest anywhere because they have separate areas for RV parking.
Most other states you are in with the semis and they are VERY noisy. We found WM parking lots to be quieter.

I guess we are lucky in my state. Since implementing the free coffee program crime rates have gone down. They have had discussions in our Legislature about licensing fast food places to operate at rest areas. Mostly as a way of making rest areas pay for themselves.
I wonder how states that don't allow overnight parking deal with federal hours of service rules for commercial trucks? Semi drivers by law HAVE to stop and much longer than 3 hrs.
From what I can see from this thread it is definitely one of those east vs west issues.
