We're looking at a Palomino Maverick M8801 pickup camper. Anyone have experience or feedback with them?

we looked real hard at the palomino campers. nice layout and the weight was right. we just couldn't get past the small holding tanks. seems to me they were like 15 gallons each black and grey. wasn't going to work for us as we are a family of four. other than the tanks, I really liked the campers.

I have it's sister, the Palomino Real Lite HS-1810. I like it although I admit, it isn't finished out as nicely as many of the others, Quality Control at Palomino seems to suck (thermostat not level, far from perfect finish inside and the like). On the other hand, for the price of my unit, I am delighted with it understanding that it is at best a 3 season TC.

Kenzmad mentioned the small holding tanks, and they are...on mine they're only 7 and 8 gallons...I just forget which is gray and which is black...old age strikes again.

If you have any specific questions about mine, PM me....

Palominio is a very low end, bargain basement brand of camper. That's not all bad if you are on a tight budget and don't mind things not being built and finished less than ideal. I don't go for high end myself but I would steer away from Palomino unless you can't afford anything else.
I had one a while back. It contained a lot of chip board construction. I had to fix numerous things but I did get several enjoyable years of camping before I sold it.

Bought a used 2006 8801. had it out west ( yellowstone,North rim, Mesa Verde etc)and through New England with no problems. It's a good TC for the money. My thinking is spend the money on a better truck. Think of how much time will be spent in the truck vs Camper.

My friends bought a Palominio used and got it for a good dollar. They don't seem to have any problems with it.

I bought mine new last year ( 2011 1000SLLB ) and I like it. The fit and finish looks as good as I have had in my 5th wheels. The other things is the factory is responsive and willing to answer any questions. I would say that for the money it exceeds that value.

Bear Watch... your profile shows that you are in Iowa. have you visited and looked closer at NorthStar campers?

Let me tell you where I sit before where I stand: I am biased FOR the NorthStar brand.

If you have not visited the factory... do a little more research and check them out. You are relatively "local" to the factory. I visited Rex and the crew this spring as I have always wanted to check out the birth of my latest NS. My camper is out of any reasonable warranted period (irrespective of components... 'fridge, water heater, etc...)

...but..

...as they looked closer at mine, they saw things that looked fine to me and had me "pull the camper into that garage bay over there" and they gave a close look over and made some improvements and gave me parts to add and update on my own. Your location literally has a better- than- a- dealer situation to some extent!

I cannot say enough about this camper and the folks behind it. I have some issues on some component incorporated (e.g. Dometic windows...that's another story in another thread...) but those independent components do not change my mind on the camper that NorthStar builds.

Very happy with mine... We have been using it for a year now and really enjoy it.. Yes tanks are very small, however we camp mostly in campgrounds or are only out for a few days and it doesn't matter.. Is it a Lance or other high end no. but spending considerable less to get into truck camping worked for us.. Also construction seem very good on the newer models..Check out Truckcamper Magazine's article on Palomino RV Factory Tour.....

I bought my 8801 early this year and so far, no problems at all; I love it.

I've had 2 truck campers in the past, both purchased used. They both had leak damage and other problems as I found after I purchased them. I bought a new 8801 for less than I could buy a similar size used camper in my area. Starting off with a new camper, I can maintain it, prevent leaks, and I know what I have. The 8801 has metal framing (unlike my last 2 campers) and the major appliances are name brand that are found in other brands. For me, for the money and the time I actually go camping, it's been a good decision.
